SOCIETIES TO CONFER. On Tuesday next a conference of Societies for tlio Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be held in Wellington. About twelve delegates from : various societies aro expected to attend. The order, paper includes proposals as follow:— Christchurch Proposals. 1. That a Bill bo promoted for the better prevention of cruelty to animals, to include special legislation for the following:—(a) Slaughtering by humane methods; (b) enclosed coursing matches; (c) live pigeon matches; (d) trapping rabbits in steel traps; (o) dehorning cattle over six months; (f) docking horses' tails; (g) firing horses for lampas; (It) rings in dogs' noses; (i) boundary dogs; (j) overhead check-rein; (k) transit of cattle (sea and laud);.(1) tip-dray horses (one driver each dray). 2. That a Bill bo promoted for the prohibition of the. use of the pen rifle. > 3. That a further application bo luado for Government subsidy. ; Wellington Proposals, The Wellington Society's proposals are embodied in the following remits:— 1. That it is desirable that drivers and owners of vehicles be licensed, and that steps'bo taker to have tho existing legislation amended to enable local authorities to make by-laws.to provide for same. That is bo also provided that any driver or owner guilty of three offences shall have his license cancelled. 2. That legislation be introduced to enforce registration of all vehicles, private and otherwise, and for compulsory numbering ■ of s:\mc. 3. That it'is desirable that,local authorities should have power to issue cab and other vehicle licenses, subject to only suitable horses being used, and that steps be taken to this end. 4. That the question of weight of loads be considered with a view to securing a reduction, where necessary, in the weight allowed by the by-laws of local authorities. 5. That representations bo made to tho railway authorities for tlie making of better provision for the carriage of dogs to shows, etc. 6. That steps be taken tn secure completo co-operation, of tho police with tho society. 7. That some legislative provision bo made to regulate the method of carriage of poultry, in particular as to the coop space necessary for different classes of poultry. 8. That, greater legal powers bo obtained for tl'l- inspectors of the society. 9. l'hat a Dominion executive of the societies be set np to deal with legislative and other matters upon which it is desirable to have unanimity among the New Zealand societies, and that such oxmii ive be composed of nominees of the various societies on a proportional basis.
