j OPIUM AND INSOMNIA. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, April 28. The (teaHi occurred at his homo at Penrose of l'nuieis Mason, a'well-known hairdresser of'Quesn Street, Auckland, as tho result of azi orerdoso of opium' taken as a soporific. Mason had been, for some' time past, suffering from insomnia, and, ill order to induce sleep, lie had been ill the habit of tc.kiug each night a dose of opium in whisky. Ho was exceptionally troubled with sleeplessness on Friday, even after he had taken his usual amount of tho soporific, and, early on Saturday morning, he look another dose. The result was that ho shortly afterwards became unwell, and a doctor was called in. He made some improvement in the morning, but, later,' ho becamo worse, and iio died early in the evening. \ An inquest was held, ami a vcrdict -was returned that death was duo to an overdose of opium accidentally taken, ' ONEW.HERO FATALITY. Auckland, April 28. The constable at Pukekohc reported to tlio Auckland police ofllco to-day that, 011 Friday, a Maori named Marshall" had been killed in the Onewhero bush as the ■ result of a log rolling on him.
