"THE YOUNG MOTHER."

A practical guid for the mother in the care of herself both before and after the birth of her child is to be found in the book edited by J. Bernard Dawson, M.D., Loudon, F.R.C.S., England, and just recently received in this colony. It is entitled "The Young Mother," and the keynote is struck in the opening paragraph, which says:—"The newly-mado wife takes upon herself a grave responsibility when sho becomes the possible mother ol a new generation of citizens. Upon her and the care which she takes of her health will depend to no small extent the well-being of her children." To-day, states Dr. Dawson, we are passing through a period of strain which is having a very serious effect upon the nervous stability of the race, the difficulties and stress of civilised existence are exacting a quid pro quo, which leaves us more and more bereft of nervous equanimity. It is not possible to develop the magnificent intellect of the modern European without depriving him of physical constancy. The physical and mental outfit of women was meant for tho reproduction of the race," lie states, "and it is the experience of medical men that among women who ore mothers is to be found greater freedom from nervous troubles than from childless wives." Tho only danger is usually brought about from lack of care, either on the part of'the mother or those about her before tho advent of her child. Tho book is full of concise, simple,' and compact information nliout tho earo of herself at such a time, ami the expectant mother will undoubtedly find it of great assistance and comfort.
