GOULD INSTITUTE.

OPENED BY HON. E. H. MODES.. (By Telesraph.—Presa Afeociatloa.) Christchurch, April 28. Tho Hon. K. Heaton Ithodes, ActingMinisteT for Education, opened tho Gould Training Hostel at Opanva this afternoon. Tho institution, which is tho first of its 'kind in New Zealand and tho first erectcd in Australasia, is for tho purposo of giving training iu domestic science. It is an offshoot of tho Christchurcli Technical College, and also of tho School of Domestic Instruction, tho beginnings of which dato back to 1895. 1 . The Minister in tho . course of ' his speech, poiated out that in Dunedin-,' owing to the generosity of Mr. John Studholme, thero was a Chair of Domestic Science, but Christchurch lia-J advanced a step farther, for at tho hostel 1 girls would receive practical training, whilst at Dunedin they were giving theoretical instruction, He was informed that instruction at tho hostel would be thoroughly practical and scientific for it-was contended that to know "why" is often of more importanoj than to know "how." Tho hostel would solve only one of the educational difficulties of the Dominion. It was obviously impossible fov financial and other reasons to at once establish similar hostels in other centres, but thoso responsible for primary and secondary education fully recognised the need for such institutions, anil it was hope.l (with tho aid of voluntary contributions and tho Government subsidy) that in the near future such institutions would be ostablishcd in other centres. The present Government, like previous Governments, was thoroughly in sympathy with overy endeavour to advance education, and in tho Hon. Jas. Allen they had a Jlinister who ' thoroughly sympathised with such efforts. Mr. Allen,i in his capacity as Minister of Finance, had to keep a firm hand on the Dominion's purse, but' he would open it fo its fullest extent in tho advancement of education.
