Tho l'ehnc Borough Council mot last evening, fJio Mayor (Jlr. M'Uwan) presiding. Mr. W. S. Short, Commissioner of tho ltutt Road Inquiry Hoard,-wroto notifying the council that tho Commission would sit on May 1 next.—Received. A lotter was received from Captain Halsey, of 11. M.S. i\e«; Zealand, thanking tho council for placing tho recreation ground at tho disposal of tho men of his vessel. A:similar letter was received from Jlr. 11. M. Wilson. Both letters woro received. A communication was received from the Postmaster-General, through Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.l'., stating that tho amount of business dono at tho Pctcno Telegraph Office did warrant tho opening of the office on Sundays.—Received, ' The Iloail'h Inspector reported a case of enteric fever in tho borough, and stated that the usual precautions had been taken. —Received. The council decided to co-operate with the Jliraniar Borough Council in a joint protest agaiJLslt the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's increased levy. Councillor I'ipcr moved: "That an opinion be obtained from Jlr. 'IV P. Jlartin us to tile legality of tho council's action in lpvying water rates—(a) 011 such lauds as 1 may bo within 300 foot of a water main, but which cannot \io supplied with water, unless it is conveytxl through private property, the owners of which have not given their constat so to do. (b) If any other cause pro wilts tiio supply of water to lands wit'iin 300 foet of a main, arc such lands liable for half water rales." Tho motion was ■carried. ■ Councillor Pipe- -lis) submitted two other motions dealing 1 with a certain lwatslied oil! the Petonc foreshore. Those, howcver, did not meet wiui the approval of tho majority of councillors.
