AUSTRIA'S FINANCES. The credit of Austria at the present tiino is interesting in view of the changed conditions in the Unlknns. Austria w suffering from flnnncinl mainly berauso of her enormous expenditure on military preparations. The Yicnna- correspondent of the "Economist," writing under date March 17, stated that the Hungarian Finance Minister was in urgent need of money, ami a loan of 300 million crowns wan about to bo issued, while Austria was in need of 150 million crowns. The most rema.rkoblo fact about- the Hungarian loon was that interest at 4} per cent, had to bo paid whilst, past loans were contracted at 4 per cent., and the promise to pay in gold was also promised. The floating debt,of the Dual Monarchy is enormous. The amount of Hungarian Treasury Bomb in circulation is 525 million crowns, that of Australian Treasury Bonds 255 millions, t-o which must be added Salt Mine Bonds bringing the joint floating debt to 9CO million crowns. Some of the money borrowed by Hungary will bo spent upon, the establishment of a cannon factory.

There is an impression that the greater part : of tho cereal crop lias been handled, and that velvet will lie scarce before the end of tho year. The bulk of tho business' has been done at-4s. net to grower for velvet-. Red chaff has been sold at 2s. Bd. to 3s. net, red Tuscan at- 3s. 7d.. solid straw at- os, 6id., and Marshall's white at 3s. 7d., all net. Oats show an advanco on lust week. For A grade Gorton's 2s. 3d., and B grade'2s„ have been paid, and for Algerians 2s. OJd., all net. / Tho volume of business, however, has not' been large. Oape barley has sold at. 2s. 4d. net, but there is little demand for barley, of any description. There.is little or 110 business in potatoes, the lower prices at Christ* church operating against business being done here. Tho bent, ouotations are 955. in new 'sacks. and from 85s. to 90s. in old. but even at these prices only a moderate business is being done. MEAT MARKET. Messrs. Gilbert Andersou and Co. (Messrs. Mellsop, I'Liott, and Co., agents), in their meat circular, dated London, March 20, writei Hotter weather, light deliveries of Homegrown, and advice of only small shipments of frozen meat from all quarters have helped to check tho fall in prices, 'flier,o p an indication that prices have touched bottom.
