FRENCH CIRCLE.
Captain Barclay presided nt the ordinary meeting of the French Club, held nt the Arts Club, Mowbray Street, oil Thursday evening. Tho programme opened with a clever aud amusing paper, given by Miss Tanner, of Chilton House, entitled "Beaucoup bruit pour rien," in which sho described a holiday spent in Paris, and gave tllo hislory of a bomb which did not' burst, tlepiclin& graphically the excitement engendered in connection with an expected riot, which, however, did not lake place. Miss Lockie followed with a short lecture on the subject of "L'eiiseignement de la langue francaiso au moyen du phonographe." With tho aid of an up-to-dato phonograph and a number of excellent French records, she illustrated this method of learning a language, in a way which was highly instructive, and much appreciated by a large attendance of members. Miss Smythson contributed a pianoforlo solo. A hearty vote of thanks, unanimously accorded to the three ladies, brought tho meeting to a close.
