TWENTY-EIGHT CASES AT ONCE. GAMING ACT CHARGES. Twenty-eight informations alleging illegal betting and connivance at betting wero set down for hearing in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., was on tho Bench. After the unmes of the defendants had been called, however, it was decided to adjourn the whole of tho ease till Friday next. The informations wero against tho following:—James Androw Smith (alleged betting in Willis Street), Joseph Richards (two allegations of betting in a billiard room), Andrew Martin (alleged bitting in tho Wellington Hotel), Thomas Dallon (two allegations of betting in the Wellington Hotel), William Ham (two charges of betting in tho Wellington Hotel), Salvatoro Salvey (fivo charges of betting in the Duko of Edinburgh Hotei), Christopher Jarisen, licensee of tho Wellington Hotel (three allegations of permitting and threo of connivance at gambling), and Richard Divyer, licensee of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel (threo charges of permitting and threo allegations of connivance at gambling). All tho defendants except the two hotelkeepera wero described as bookmakers. PACE ROUND A CORNER. James Henry Campbell was charged with having driven a trap round the corner of Willis and Manners Streets in excess of a walking pace. It was alleged, also, that Campbell refused to 6top when ordered to. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared on behalf of Campbell, and stated,that tho offence aroso out of a misunderstanding. Campbell was fined 10s., with costs 16s. • "DANGEROUS GOODS." Matthew Johnson pleaded guilty to a charge of having consigned dangerous goods by rail without marking them as required. Mr. C. H. Izard, for defendant, 6aid that the "goods" was a tin of ordinary crushed carbide. It was not a deliberate breach of the regulations. Johnson was lined 10a., with costs 9s. EXPENSIVE FRESH AIR. Isaac Morris was fined £1, with costs 75., for having kept liis- shop open for trading on Sunday. The defendant protested that ho had only opened tho door of the shop "to let in a littlo fresh air." Tho police said that Morris made Sunday i his beat business day. ST. PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRANT. Hugh Fahey, who was said to have celebrated St. Patrick's Day unwisely, and assaulted Yeo Choon, a Chinese, was fined JCI, and ordered to pay tho expenses of two witnesses (Bs.). I'ahey said that he had been aggravated to assault the Chinese. CRUELTY TO HORSES. George Gooch was charged with cruelly treating a horso by working it while it was sick. Mr. Webb, who appeared for the S.P.C.A., ■ said that tho case was ono of gravo ill-treatment. Gooch was fined £i, with costs .£2 2s. Cd, On a similar charge, Colin Webster was fined XI, with costs £2 2s. Cd. MILKMEN FINED. Percy Kettlen ell was fined 55., with costs <s., for having refused to supply a sample of milk to an inspector. For a similar offence, W. Wellsford was ordered to pay solicitor's fee XI Is. , OTHER CASES. ■ : Frederick WestbUry was ordered to pay costs (75.) for having left a vehicle unattended in a public street.Edward Howse and Frederick Howsu wero fined 55., with costs XI 10s., for having sold short-weight bread. . For insobriety, Georgo William Jackson was fined XI.

For albwing stock to wander, Nora Ryan was fined 10s., with costs 135., and William Adams was fined 55.. with costs 13s. ■'

Sarah Faloon was fined .£1 for having used certain language .in Sage's Lane. William Valentine Strachan was fined for having used certain language in Tory Street. '

CIVIL ACTION. ' (Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) Finality was reached in the case in which Charles Hillhouse, chairmaker, Wellington, proceeded against Joseph Sin. clair, carpenter, Wellington, claiming £10 which ho said was due to bo refunded to him under an agreement respecting the building of a motor-launch. " Mr. J. Dickson appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. r. W. Jackson for the defendant. Judgmont was entered for plaintiff for JCIO, with Jl2 Gs. costs.
