NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) Masterton, April 22. The Masterton Club's Autumn meeting opened in fine but cold weather.. The attendance was larger than on the first day of last year, but tho class of horses was not , so good. Leonta had a very comfortable, win in the Cup, and this made the fourth successive win which Mr. T. S. Bristol's horso has achievod. The Open Flying Handicap was a "soft snap" for Leapuki, who stripped in great fettle. The day's racing concluded without a hitch or inquiry of any kind. - A. Oliver rode three winners during tho afternoon, and is once more in tho leading position among winning jockeys, with 43 wins to his credit. Astrologer, Sir Moseley, and Master Lupin carried the bulk of the money in the Maiden Race, and the last-named two paid dividends. Master Lupin was first out, but Sir Moseley soon took charge, and had a very easy win. Dispatch Carrier was a poor third, with Astrologer nest. Intention whipped round when the barrier went up, and lost a lot of ground. Mon Ami was at a short prico in the April Handicap, but she got stopped badly on the turn, and was then just beaten for second place. Te Kahurangi led for a furlong, when Aloha ranged up, but Leapuki soon had a break on tho field, and was not again headed. Amber ancl "White put in a, 'good run in 'tho straight, but could not sustain it. Moil Ami came from a long way back, and finished very fast, but Aloha just lasted long enough. Blue Lake, despite her big weight, was going, well at the business end of the, journey, and is fast running back to form.
Austin's, form at "Wanganui was- the cause of the strong support accorded him in the mile Hack Race, but a very fast-\ run race saw him beaten out of a place. He is only a little fellow, and his weight, combined with the pace, beat him. After u good finish, Eedloli just beat Gloiifern by a head, with Arohakau close up. The favourite had a.winning chance at the distance, but the last furlong settled him. Glenfcm had done some smart work on tho tracks, but his bad luck seems to remain with him. : v Local support made Sir Knox a better favourite than Leonta in the Waipipi Cup, but the latter won after getting anything but a good run. He is a rare finisher, and, to-day, ho beat Ceylon at that part of tho -"game, though tho Wellington mare has a reputation as a finisher. Backers were somewhat deterred from supporting Leonta because his rider is not an "old hand," but to-day ho handled him well. and. for the second time in succession, won the cup. At the'start Montreal led from Leonta and Yi, but the Wa.nganui horse lost his position down the back, and Sir Knox ran into second place, while Lord Renown had a big lead. With half a mile to go Sir Knox dropped back with a broken blood-vessel, and Leonta'ran up to Lord Renown, whom lie quickly settled. Ceylon then took a hand, but Leonta al-' ways had her measure, and won a good race by a length. Vi.was just clear of Lord Renown and Imagination; Kaniki was the medium of .in extensive public "plunge" in the six. furlongs Hack Race, but lie was comfortably beaten bv Black Lupin, with Sura turn just a neck belter ti'an tho others. The last-named had a good break at, the half-way, but'lie ran off the courso at the (urn, and took No Idee with him. Oliver then took Black Lupin to tho front, and lie won comfortably. The favourite looked hardly ready, and will bo the better for the race.
Eedloh was saddled up a second time in tho Ladies' Bracelet with a 101b. penalty. He was made a good favourite, and won anyhow, lie was a long way hack before entering the straight,> but lie then came on tho outside of four horses, and romped in an easy winner. Mediterranean got within two lengths of him, and Merrie Lad, who had made all the running, was just of Silver King. Huia and Muscadine were scratched.
Mon Ami and Glenforn were withdrawn from the Open Welter Handicap. F, Tilley sent out another favourite in Lady Volga with Oliver in the saddle. She won nicely from Big Blast, with Negative in third place. The last-named got a bud passage, and then came on tho outside. Diavolo. C'ulliiiaii. and Bi<r Blast nude the pace for six. furlongs, but then the favourite, who was always handy; nunc tlirniijfh, and finished- well. Mani(mu win a'long war back in the wly etagesi but 6he fluisuod on (a.st, and got
into fourth place. As they passed tho post Eclogue was a long way back last. J-lio winner and runner-up wor© iirst and second favourites. The Great Mogul and Submersion divii j." 10 tolnjisaior honours in the concluding event. 'I'hoy both began- smartly, but the Elevation filly failed to Ro further tnau four furlongs, and The Great Mogul won nicely by a couple of lengths. Artificial came very fast in the straight, and beat Microbe for second place.

DEATH OF'CORAZON. (By Teloeraph.—Special Oorreeuond/mU Hastings, April 24. Sportsmen generally will regret to hear of the death of Sir William Russell's, great steeplechaser Corazon,' which occurred at V. Colello's training stables last evening. Tho son of Coeur do Lion —Rasilka started in the Hnndicap Hurdles at the Hawke's Bay' Jockey Club's meeting last week, but pulled up very lame. Subsequently ho developed dysentery, and, although Trainer Colello and Veterinarian Brodie did all that was possible tho horse died as slated. Corazon , lias left behind liiin a record that is almost unique amongst steeplechase horses. .His'l9ll season stands out os a wonderfully brilliant series of performances. Starting with the Wanganui Steeplechase, which he won in brilliant fashion, lio went on to Auckland and appropriated tho Great Northern; setting up now records on cach occasion. Ho appropriated tho Wellington Steeplochaso in July, and, at Christchurch, was beaten by a head only after carrying 12st. 31b. in 2sec. over record time. Corazoii was , bred by Sir William Russell, who raced him as a two-year-old and three-year-old on tho fiat. As a five-year-old ho was put to hurdles, and won for his owner _ quito a number of events. It was not till ' 1910 that, ho was tried over country, and his success at this class of racing has already been referred to. Ho was a wonderfully game horse, good tempered, and easy to handle, and could reu'e equally, well whether the going was hard or soft. CITY AND SUBURBAN HANDICAP. . WON BY DRINMORE. DISMISSED,
. MR, GREENWOOD'S APPEAL. • Bj TelKtash—Prws Association—Couyrielir (Roc. April 24, 10.40 p.m.) Sydney,- April 24. The Australian Jockey Club has dismissed Mr. G. D. Greenwood's appeal against the stipendiary stewards' finding in tlio Valido caso. Valido is owned by Mr. G. D. Greenwood, of New Zealand. The horso won. the Flying Handicap at Randwick on Easter Monday, and tho stipendiary stewards nsked for an inquiry into his running on that day as compared with that, on the previous Saturday, when Valido finished about eighth in the High-Weight Handicap, carrying 9st. 71b. In tho flying Handicap on Easter Monday, Valido had 7«t. 101b. Tho stipendiary steward! gave the following finding in connection with tho running of Valido:—"Wo cannot but regard the form as inconsistent; butj taking , into consideration the difference' in tlio scale of weights and the bad run Valido got on Saturday in tho big field, we hold that those connected with 1 tho liorsa are entitled to have their explanation accepted. The difference in rae betting on the two races was unsatisfactory and unexplained, and wo consider the employment of .burke on tho first day, when l'inn, the rider on tho second day,'.was not riding for the stable, was ill-advised.''
FRANK WOOTTON'S ILLNESS. London, April 23. The latest operation on Franlr' Wootton's throat has .given him great relief, and ho is more hopeful of being able to resume his riding this season.
