Admiral Sir Georgo King-Hall, commanding tlio Australian Squadron, speaking before the Royal Society of St. George, congratulated Australia on tho progress of her Navy. Tho men entering it had proved full of zeal, nmenablo to discipline, and proud of tho service. Thcro had been no lack of applicants to enter the service. While avoiding politics, tho Admiral ventured the four following remarks:— 1 "(1) It i 9 most improbable that wo will be ablo to keep this vast country unless it is effectively occupied. (2) Every man and woman should study world politics to somo extent, and not livo in tho narrow circle of tho parish pump. "(3) Never allow tho Navy to be tho ' shuttlecock of political parties. . "(4) Study tho naval question. "How do the people her© exist?" tho Admiral askbd. "Merchandise to the valuo of 210 millions sterling yearly is carried in your ships," he continued, "which must iis war timo bo sure and safo for tho carriage ior othcrwiso of your trade. You cannot live by /taking in - each other's washing.'^
