' Wangarui, April 23. rlio difficulty which llio health authorities have iu enforcing proper observanco of hygienic rules in the of Maoris was illustrated l>y an oecurrcnco which look place at Wangauui Hospital this morning, when a parly of excited ami angry raised such a hullabaloo that the police had to bo called lo quieten them. II appears that two Maori girls (sisters) were recently admitted to tho 1 hospital suifering from typhoid fever, and ono died. Their friends immediately jumped to the. conclusion that the oilier girl was doomed if she stayed in tho institution, pud they proceeded there in a body lo demand sho be handed / over to them. The Health Inspector, who happened t) be there, questioned thorn,' and they made known their intention to "lake her a long distance from town," presumably with tho object of removing lipr from llio supposedly malign influenco of thp pakeha medicine man. Tho inspector naturally refused the request, whereupon they declared their intention of taking the girl by force, and, consequently, the police were rung up. Ultimately, after consultation between tlie inspector and tho medical superintendent, dt was agreed to let tho Maoris have the girl, on their giving an undertaking that she would bo isolated, and treated under medical advice. To what extent, however, tho Natives will carry out this undertaking remains to bo seen.
