U.S.S. CO.'S NEW LINER.

THE NIAGARA.'' ,\ ' By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright Melbourne, April 22. .The Union .Steam Ship Company's new Pacific , liner, Niagara, has arrived: here. ■ The Niagara is a triple screw steamer, and was launched at Clydebank, by' Mrs. Borden, .wife of the Prime Minister of : Caiiada, .on. August 17. She is a, noteworthy vessel in several respects.' Built specially;' for the; Canadian-Australasian service, which the 1 Union Steam 1 Ship Company. is'to conduct under subsidies from the Canadiau and New Zealand Governments;' with her tonnage of 13,500 she will be t|ie largest vessel, registered in Australasia. '. Her machinery consists of and a low-pressure, turbino driving ,'a centre, shaft,, but the. innovation of special idterest'is in 'connection with' the .boilers. JOf „the» j tliero: are 'ten. ,In . six,' steam is generated' by. coal, "and in four* by, oil, fuel,' while tho bunkers,■ tanks, and boilers are iill so designed that they can be adapted to .carry -and use .oil fuel exclusively as soon as sufficient supplies can be obtained a,t t the ports of call. The new liner .is domrnanded by Captain John Gibb;, Mr.i H. C.'Hammond is chief officer; Mr. W. Paul, extra chief officer; Mr. V; Richardson, 6econd; Mr. , G. H. Jackson, third' and Mr. A. Taylor is. purser; The medical: officer is n New Zealander—Dr. Peter M'Nab,' of Auckland, who has been a student ,at (Edinburgh Univ«sity. According to advice received at the local office, the Niagara was to sail 'again for Sydney at 3 p.m.. yesterday.
