TIIO pea-rifle in the hands of the small boy has been in evidence in Lower Ilutt for somo'time. Yesterday morning a young man named Henry Sungreen, whilst cycling along Waterloo Road, had a narrow escape .from being wounded. Ho made inquiries and found that a party of boys liad been seen in the vicinity armed with a ,pci\-rifle. Residents have several times complained about these boys firing indiscriminately.
_ The annual meeting of parishioners of St. James's Church, Lower Ilutt, will take-plneo'on this night week. . At the final meeting of tho present I'etone Borough Council, which is to bo held next Monday, night, Councillor Piper has given notice to raovo the following motions:—"That an opinion be obtained from Mr. T. F. Martin us to the legality, of tho council's action in levying water rates, (a) on such lands as may bo within SOI) feet of a water main,, but which cannot bo supplied with water unless it is conveyed through private property, the owners of which have not given their con* sent to do so; (b) if any other cause prevents the supply of water to lands within' SOU feet of a main, are such lands liable' for water rates?" "That the Harbour board be-requested to reciuire tho owner of a boat shed now on that portion of [he beach under tho board's control," and in front of the concrete retaining wall, to remove same to a site cast of the rselson Street culvert, such site, if nccesbc Provided by the council." -Lhat in the event of such request being agreed to by the board and the shed being of sufficient stability tp bear removal, that the council sliilt and re-crect same at its own expense." A deputation waited upon Mr. A. Coles of 1 etone, last evening to ask him to allow himself tq bo nominated for the L'etone Mayoral chair. A complaint by Mr. Lester as to tho Henry Htroet access was passed,on to the Work's Committee for report. Tho resignation of lio.nl ioremnii Wiikie was received with regret, and the position offered to his assistant, Mr. Greenwood. A letter was received from Messrs. Brandon, Hislop and Brandon, on behalf of Mrs. Martin, asking the board to prevent a recurrence of certain statements made in the local publication, of wliich the town clerk is editor and publisher. This information, iu their opinion, should have remained in the possesion of the board for purely administrative purposes. A resolution was carried to the effect that the letter be referred lxick to tho writers for dispatch to tho publisher of the journal in question, the board having 110 jurisdiction over tiio clerk in his private capacity. Commissioner Webb's motion, inviting townspeople to make gifls of suitable deciduous trees for ornamental purpose.-? along rho by-streels, was referred to a committee to report upon at next- board meeting.
