ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SOLDIER'S DEATH. , TRAPPED BY A TEAM-CAE, Tho circumstances surrounding tho death of John Dillon, a seaman who had seen service in the Egyptian war and had been in tho Navy, were investigated by Dr. M'Artliur, S.JI., yesterday. Deceased met with a tram accident on April 17. and died in tho Hospital two davs later. Evidence was given by tramway motor-! men to the effect (hat, as an Oriental' Bay car was proceeding along Lambton Quay, Dillon stepped out from behind a Lyall Bay car which was going in the opposite direction. The Oriental Bay car struck Dillon, and threw him against a Newtown car, which was following tho Lyall Bay car. Ho was taken to tho Public Hospital, and there ho died on April 19.
A verdict: was relumed "that deceased had diod (is u result of an accident caused when passing behind one tram and colliding with another going in tho opposite direction."
The Coroner added that tho accident showed the need for caro on the part of the public when passing behind trams. Many accidents of this naturo would be avoided if pedestrians looked first to seo whether tho other lino was clear before crossing over.
ACCIDENT AT OTAIvI. Mr. W. Mansfield, monumental mason, of Wellington, lmd the misfortune to dislocato his ankle yesterday morning at Otaki. He was carrying timber .up a liill near , tho Roman Catholio cemetery, where ho is doing concrete work, when ho fell, and the load descended on his foot. Ho was taken to tho local hospital. LITTLE BOY AND MOTOR-CAR. 'A littlo boy named Harold Simpson,, aged seven years, had rather a narrow escape from being killed yesterday. Shortly after mid-day a motor-car in which some of tho officers of H.M.S. New Zealand were being taken out to Miramar by the Miramar Borough Council, was travelling along Kent Terrace when tho littlo boy, who was running across the road, was struck by one of the front wheels. He was knocked under tho car, which fortunately passed over him without doing serious injury. Ho received medical attention, and was taken to tho children's hospital, where -it was ascertained that ho was severely bruisted and was suffering from shock. A fracture of tho jaw hail also occurred.
DOG AND MOTOR-CAR. OCCUPANTS SEVERELY INJURED: (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.). Turakina, April 21. A motor-car Occident occurred on the Bull Road, about two miles and a half from Turakina, this afternoon, resulting in two well-known Feilding residents being severely injured. They were Messrs. Giesen and Walker, and it appears thai, in trying to avoid a dog, the car was swerved, causing a capsize, Mr. Gjesen had his collarbone broken, whilst* l Mr. Walker's ankle was fractured. Dr. Willis, of Feildinj;. was telegraphed for, and lost no time in arriving by motor and taking tho injured men back to Feilding.
AN UNRELIABLE HORSE. Turakina, April 21. A young girl named Molly Leo met with a painful accident at Turakina tins afternoon. The horse which she was riding bolted, and travelled nearly all tho way to Watigaohu, when it tired. On tho return homo the liorso started off again, and, when reaching Devil's Elbow, it fell, throwing the rider heavily. The girl's head was badly cut, besides which sho also sustained an injury to her arm. The liorso was also injured. DROWNED OFF A LAUNCH. (By Telograph—Pree3 Association.) Auckland, April 21. Frank Patterson, aged 17. employed on tho Harbour Board launch, accidentally fell overboard and was drowned. DROWNED IN GRAVEL PIT. , Invercarflill, April 21. Information was received by tho polico to-day that a married man named Frank Dorling, aged '28, ivas found drowned ill a gravel pit near his house at Wyndham at i o'clock on Sunday afternoon. Deceased left his home at about eleven o'clock in tho morning. He was subject to fits, and it is supposed that he accidentally fell inlo tho pit.
DRAGGED UNDER A TRUCK. Invercargill, April 21. Ail accident, occurred on the New Zenland Loan and Mercantile Company's siding at tlie Bluff this .afternoon when ono of the shed hands, named Robert Campbell, fell Tinder a horse-drawn truck mid was dragged along bv the brake rod. Ho was found to bo suffering from dislocation of the back and a wound in the head. He was removed to the hospital.
