EASTER EFFORT.

CITIZENS' CARNIVAL,

f THE MOTOR DAY AT TRENTHAM, The "last effort' in conection .with the' Citizens' Easter Carnival took tho form of a motor-cycle carnival,' 'and was .held on the Trent ham racecourse on Saturday afternoon. In all, there were about 2000 peoplo present, besides some hundred aiid fifty sailors from H.M.S. New '.Zealand. Being the first carnival'of its kind, it deserved a larger patronage, for the function was really - worth witnessing. Many athletic carnivals, of vrfrious descriptions, have bcc-n-held in Wellington, and perhaps not oue lias proved so exciting and exhilarating as that held on .Saturday. . The Treutliani course proved to bo a good track, and competitors wore able to attain, fairly high speeds. Tito grass had : been cut lor tho occasion', and save for , »ne Lump, the' turf was'in excellent' condition. Tho tump in question was opposito the saddling paddock, arid its existence was unavoidable. •Unfortunately,.. however, it was just at the /beginning .of a bend in tho truck, aiid competitors soon realised that..a little care was needed in navigating it. - ... Perhaps, the most exciting race of the day was the inter-iSland championship, .of 10 miles. In Uiis event all interest was centred on two competitors, ivw.,- E. F'. C. Hinds and A. D:. Boag', (both of Palmerbton North).- In nil tiiurb were four starters, the other two being E. C. Bender : (Wellington) and N. S. Hyslop (Hastings).- 'I'll© (jrartct started, ".from ■ the 'scratch. mark, and lloag, oil . a 7 h.p. Matchless machine, secured the lead, with Hinds, '011 n 7 h.p. Indian, next, ■ and Bender.and Hyslop, both on 7 h.p. In-' dians,/following -in that order..- After going about three miles, Hyslop, who got a bad start, .-jvithilrew, and from then onwards ths.riifce was between BoSg and Hinds. B-oag kept to tho. rails on the, bends, and Hinds, who-was going at what ■ appeared , a terrific speed,' waS alwut two iiundred yards 'in..: the., i'«nf at _ i/ie bend where tlio bump \yas.' Hinds gained considerable ground each time, and as the two riders.'passed the starter, .who . announced that they, were 011 .the last lap, the'spectators cheered and'shouted .with excitement. Hinds was . now very closo to Boag, nud everyone was of opinion that tho coming beml woul,d'piit Hinds' in the lead. But the unexpected happened. Both lyerc going "all out," but just as Hinds • seemed about to 'obtain his well-deserved lead, his machine skiSd-scl. The crowd then . fully expected an accident, but Hinds stuck to his. ina.cliine, and saved himself j from a nasty I fall. As lie. regained con-1 trol tho spectators'cheered him loudly. By tliis timo, however, Boag had sufficient lead to-bring, him homo first/ Hinds, who was not'so very far jh the rear, came secondhand Bender, who was some distance away,, .third, Boag was loudly cheercd as ho rushed past the • winning post first: TII9 open handicap of fifteen, miles was well contested,-aud Hinds (scr.) 011 his ;7 h.p. Indian, proved an evsy winner. ! )A. J. Le C'omte . (GOsec.) who camo. . second easily, iwas unfortunate enough to meet with an accident just after he passed the winning l post. Le Comte was .just going | round the '.bend-'whew the .bump was, when his machine skidded,. and in an em deavour to-steady- himself and. the machine, the handles twisted, "and the rider losing control, fell heavily on - to - the ground, Ho'.was stunned by the fail, but did not receive any internal injury. He • v was carried off. the field and attended by. ft doctor,, but .was afterwards able to proceed home..,'- . 1;'

It was ."rather .-a pity that the officials did not adhere : strictly to starting time 9 of therevents. . Owing, to the lack of strictness in- that direction, _two events liad to bo left out, and at the'last minute there was ; a general .'rush for the train, which as it-was,, left a few of-the latecomers behind. -

Some of the times recorded indicated that several cycles .n'qro ; c'oing at rates' of over GO mi!6s per hour?, Members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade were present in case' of necessity, and pave th?ir Jservices gratis., fhe 'catering ivos done;by : <Mr. : jShout, of Trentham. '
