CITY ELECTIONS.
THE TACTICS OF "LABOUR," MR. MORIARTY'S CASE. WHAT THEY ASKED HIM TO DO. During his interesting reference In hi* reasons for declining to stand oli Iho "Labour" ticket (in his speech in (ho Conceit Chamber or tho Town Hall on Thursday night), Mr. D. Morinrfy, who, is an,.lndependent candidate lor a Feat on tho Wellington City Council, stiid that ho had been waited on by a deputation from tho "Labour" party, who wanted to know what ho was standing as. H« had replied, "Independent." 110 had, he continued, been nominated by tho United Labour l'arty for tho ticket, but had declined to stand on it. After ho bod deliberately omitted to attend a certain conference, Messrs. ,Ross ("Maoriland Worker")' and L. M. A. Roardon, ns a deputation from, their party, waited on him, asking him not to stand as an "Independent," and proposing that if Mr. Morinrty would stand on their ticket they would put a, man out and put him in the fifteen. This offer Mr. Moriarly refused lo accent*.
Tho foregoing statements of Mr. Moriarty appeared in last Friday's Dominion. In Saturday's Dominion thero Appeared tho following letter lo the editor:—
"I wish to publicly deny tho 6tatoinont inado by Mr. I). Moriarty that 'Messrs. Keardcn and Ross had offered lo withdraw ono of tho fifteen in his favour.' No suc'h .offer was mode, nor had wo any power or authority to nnko such an offer.—] nm, etc., - "L. M. A. 11EARDEN, "Secretary, Wellington District Coun« cil United Labour Party."
In conversation with a Dominion re. porter ou Saturday, Mr. Moriarty saidi "This is tho moat cunningly-worded sixline letter I have seen. Mr. Hearden trie# to make H a personal matter, but that in n! quibble. 1 havo never suggested that Messrs. L. M. A. lteardou and 11. S. Rosa waited oil me personally; I nay thoy waited oil mo as a deputation from a combined mooting of the Unity Congress Committee and the District Council of tlio United Labour Purty. Proof of this is indicated by the following letter which 1 received:—
Wellington Trades and Labour Council, Trades Hall, 43 Cuba Street, Wellington, New Zealand. February' 21st, 1913.
Mr. D. Moriarty, Wellington. Deal - Sir,-A committee from the District Council of tho United Labour party will meet a sub-committee from tho Unity Congress Committee on Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock nt tlio Trades Hall, Cuba' Street, when mobters of mutual interest will bo discussed. I have been requested by th» Unity Congress Commifteo to extend an invitation to yourself, so trust you will bo ablo lo bo present. Yours fraternally, L. M. A. RfiARDEN, Secretary.
"Where fhero is smoke," continued Mr. Moriarty, "there is fire. That letter was the iirst step in the matter. Tho second was that I deliberately omitted to attend the meeting. I liad no business to discuss with them, and saw no necessity foi my Rohig there. The third stage wm reached on tho day following that mooting to which I was invited. On that dnj Messrs. L. M.-A.'Reardon and R. S. Ross came to my office and told me that they had' been appointed by tile meeting to Which the letter invited me to wait upon mo as a deputation from that meeting. Would I receive them? I said that I would. They tried to induce mo to stand down a 9 an Independent candidate for the City Council. But when they found thai this failed, I now again assert, thoy made an offer to mo to withdraw one-of tho Labour fifteen and placo me on the ticket in his stead. Tlicy said that my standing would split the Labour vote, inasmuch aa a great number of, tho .workers had told tliem that they were going to support me in any case, whether I was on tho ticket or not. I replied that, for inn to go on their ticket would entail » sacrifico of principles on my part. Does Mr. Rearden remember this-conversation and tho answer of Mr. Ross to this statement of mine? This is what Mr. Rosi' answered:
"'lf Mr. George Farland, who is standing as an Independent candidate for the Harbour Board has seen fit to sacrifico his principles, why can't you do the same?'
"I asked Mr. Ross what Mr. Farland had to do with my case; and I asked him in what manner Mr. I'arland was sacrificing his principles. Mr. Ross replied that Mr, Porland was going to join their ticket, and that Mr. 13. Tregear had kindly consented to stand down in his favour. It will be noticed that Mr. Tregear has stood down off tho Labour ticket tor the Harbour Board; but Mr. Farland has not accepted the position offered, ho still remaining Independent, and tliat another man has been found to complete the ticjteK '
"As regards Mr. Eeardcn's statement that they hud no Authority, Mr. Rcarden may remember Hint as soon as (liey modo the offer to mo I questioned the tactics of the meeting in offering to place me on tho tickot. ■ 1 «\id thai my narao lind not-been submitted to the ballot by which tlio Labour tickets were supposed .to liavo been arrived at. I told Messrs.-Rcnrdcn. mul Itoss plainlj-- that they were supposed' lo have held a democratic ballot, end their fifteen were supposed to bo the chosen of lli'o Labour people, and yet tho .Labour bosses wero prepared to knock on elected man off the ticket to suit their own ends. , That, perhaps, accounts for tho (ilatimiqnt, of Mr, Keimlen to the effect that: they, had no : authority. "You will notice that ho does not deny that they camc as a deputation to ine, nor does ho deny that they bad previously written me a letter asliing mo to attend tho meeting. It is now for them to. explain to tho public what the deputation cunie for, particularly when ilicy knew that'l was not a member of tho labour party branch or of nuy federation or lwdv belonging to tho Unity Congress. Why did they, I repeat, come to iiio, a rtuiir outsider? Let them answer that." CANDIDATES!
