CROQUET & BOWLS.
THE KELBURNE SQUABBLE,
CITY COUNCIL'S LAST WORD. N Tho City Council last night again had a spirited argument about tho leasing of somo land on the Town Belt at Kclburae to tlio Kclburno Ladies' Croquet Club lor the purpose of forming on it a croquet grouud. The question was raised first of all by the following recommendation of. the Reserves Committee:— "That ono aero of ground at Sec- ' Hon 48, Town Belt, bo granted to the Kclburno Ladies' Croquet Club for tho purpose o£ forming croquet grounds on tho same conditions as those imposed with respect to tho land granted to tho Kclburno Bowline; , Club." Councillor Atkinson led tho opposition as usual. Ho is opposed to tho alienation of tho reserves in any way whatsoever.. Councillor Fuller made a good retort to him. Ho said tho council proposed to do no more than lease tho land, and ho preferred to see "tho land leased for . citizens to play on rather than for cows to chow on," which latter wag tho only useful purposo to which the ground was put now. ' I After a discussion in which tho arguv ment wont along tho lines mado familiar on the many previous occasions when thin matter has been before tho council, the clause was adopted byll votes to four. ■ Following-was tho division list:— , For tho clauso: Councillors Fletcher, • Shirtcliu'o, Fitzgerald, Fuller, Barber, M'Kcnsno, Godbor, Trevor,-Frost, Cohen, and Smith. Against: Tho Mayor, Councillors Alkw6on, Hindniarsh, and Tregear. Councillor Atkinson later moved Iho following motion, of which ho had given notice:— "That the following resolution passed at (ho meeting of tho Wellington City Council, held on April 3, 1913, bo rescinded, viz.: That Resolutions (1) and (2) passed by tho council on March C, 1913, lxi altered in such manner as to provido that besides the granting of a lease to the Kclburno Bowling Club of the area of ono acre from Section 48 therein referred to, a. similar area, of Section 48 "bo granted to tho residents of tho district of Kclburno for a public bowling green and croquet lawn, (ho said land to bo administered by tho Reserves Committee of tho Wellington City Council." : Ho explained that a motion did not affect tho acio given to the Bowling Club nor the aero given to the Croquet Club. All that it meant was that the cession of one aero to tho residents of Kclburno for a public bowling green and crqquet ground would bo rescinded. Tho motion was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor, which means that ho and the other supporters of tlio motion voted against the establishing of a publio recreation ground. Ayes: The Mayor, Councillors Godlior, Atkinson, Hindiuarsh, M'Kcwtio, Smith, and Tregear. Voes: Councillors Barber, Fitzgerald, Fletcher, Frost, Fuller, ShirlcliJTo, and Trovor, '
