VIVIAN ST. BAPTIST CHURCH

NEW PASTOR WELCOMED. • The Eev. 'A. - T. Brainsby, who is the new-minister'at the Vivian Street Baptist Church, and Mrs.'. Brainsby were welcomed by parishioners last evening. The church was decorated with flowers for the occasion, and there was a large congregation.', Mr. ■ Hobey' presided. The opening services were conducted by the Eev. Mr. Wainwright (Petone) and Rev. Mr. Muckay. (Island Bay). Addresses of welcome were given by Mr.' C. Godber (senior deacon) on behalf of' the-deacons of the church, Mr. W. Eglin (superintendent of the Siinday School), Mrs. Hoby, on behalf of the deaconesses, Rev. W. H. Hinton on behalf of the local Baptists, Rev. Josiah Ward, on behalf of Wesleyans, Eev, Mr. Potter, on. behalf o£, the Ministers' Association, Brigadier, on belialf of the — ~:;a.aa'a Brigadier Carniichae!, on 'behalf of the Salvation Aruiv, and the Rev. Dr. Gibb, on behalf of .Presbyterians. Mrs. Brainsby-returned thanks to th» congregation for the very hearty and warm welcome which they had given her and her husband. Letters of congratulations were received from the following:—Mr. ■!. G. Fiaser of Baptist Union). Rev. R. S. Gray: (secretary to the. Baptist Union), Rev. J. ,T. North (Mr. Brainsby'? predecessor), and Mr. H. H. Driver (a former pastor). Mr. Brainsby, in,returning thanks, mentioned that ho was very grateful to those who had sent him personal letters of welcome, more especially with regard to the letter which he had received from the Rev. .T. J. North. The speaker then went on to say that the three characteristics of a, successful- church in.' these days were as follow:—First, the church must bo noted for its sincerity; secondly, it shall be a home ,for sympathy—sympathy for every causo needing assistance; lastly, it should be an optimistic church. An optimistic church should be bright and happy in the most dark and gloomy days. During the evaning a number of musical items were given, and refreshments were served.
