ABOUT THE STORMBIRD. The Wellington and Wanganui Steam Packet Company s coastal steamer- Stormbird is sometimes credited with being tho oldeet steamer in aetivo service, states a southern exchange. While that distinction is due to her so far as Australasia is concerns, there are other steamers in activo service considerably older than the Stormbird. Ono of the most notable is tho iron screw steamer Transit- (formerly John Bowes), which was built in 1852 by Palmer Bros, and Co., at Newcastle. She is a vessel of 459 tons gross, and, according to latest advices, is trading betwoaa the Baltic and the Tyne and other porta Tho Stormbird was lauuehed .in May, 1854. and is therefore two years younger than tho Transit. Tho Stormbird was built by Laurie and Co., Whiteinch, Glasgow. WHITE STAIi I.INER CERAMIC. - The Auckland agents for the White Star Line have received «idvice that the new liner Ceramic, 18,0iO tons, will sail from Liverpool for Australia about Julv 24. arriving in Sydney on Fcpiombcr 10. The Ceramic will be. by jf<ir the largest vessel that- has ever come io Australia, and fiho will be fitted with nil the latest improvemerits in shipbuilding. No pains have been spared to make this great liner comfortable for travellers, and every means lut3 been taken to provide her with tho latest safety appliances. One feature about the passengers accommodation, which is for one clasp only, fa that a large proportion of the eabins are on the upper deck, and are situated in the midships of the vessel; there will, therefore, be a minimum amount of vibration from tho screws.
