INVERCARGILL TRAMWAYS.
A SATISFACTORY FIRST YEAR,
(By relegraph.—Prc6B Association.) ' Inyercarjill, April 15. At a special meeting of tho Town Council, held last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. W. B. Soandrett) made a statement relative to a misconception which seemed to exist in connection with the year's operation of the municipal tramways. The system consisted ,of four sections,'one running north, one north-east, one southland ono sbiith-east. One section was in running .order at tho commencement of tho finan'oial year, ono about June, and one in September, so that the whole system had been in/operation for only six months. Tho result of the year's work was expected to end with a deficiency of at least JG2OOO, which was intended to bo met by the general fund. In place of that estimate they found that the pnblio had used the cars to .ah extent much greater than was anticipated, so that the result was a loss of only .£lll2. .Now that the whole system was m operation it was expeoted that cars would entail no loss at all. There was reasonable causo to think that the revenue would more than meet the expenditure.
