PETONE COUNCIL.
5 The Petone Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. M'Ewau) presiding. The following .were present: Councillors Frost, Brocklebniik, I'iper, Short, List. Cox, Ladder, Burridge, Trueman, and Wakeham. A letter was received from the issisl-ant-Uiulcr-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, stating that the representations made regarding the imposition of u tax on motors would receive due consideration in the event of legislation bwng introduced. A letter on the same subject was received from Mr. T. 11. Wilford, M.P., stating that he agreed with th« taxing of motors. Ho also agreed that the proceeds of such tax should be handed over to and expended by the local bodies for maintaining, and improving the roads affected by motor traffic, but ho did not think that part of the proceeds of such tax should be handed to the l'etone Council. The injury being done to cars through the erection of hurdles on the road should be specially considered when a distribution as suggested takes place. ; , ; During the month of March fifteen carriers' licenses were taken out, and 1-1!) dogs were registered in the borough. It was decided to extend _ an invitation to the men of 11.M.5. New Zealand to visit Petone, and that if they were able to tome, to arrange a hockey or football match for them. .
