General Account.—Tho debit balance of the general account has-been reduced by .£719 2s. Bd. This is chiefly due to thu fact that the council decided to charge the water account with £500 towards the waterworks working expenses. The receipts, including rates, were estimated to produce £10,080 lGs. lOd. This amount was exceeded by £383 14s. 4d. Tho expenditure was estimated-,at £9815 Bs. lid. The annual expenditure was £70 os. sd. below the estimate. Library Account.—The subscriptions were estimated to produce £GO, the amount,' received was £58 3s. £G5 was transferred from tho general account in. accordance with the estimates. The ex-, penditure was estimated at £158. The annual expenditure was £145 13s. 3d. There is a small 'credit balance to this, namely, 14s. Assisted Sewage Drainage Connections. —In consequence of the repayment, either wholly or in part, by several owners'of tho amounts advanced to. them, the receipts exceeded tho estimate by £126 ss. 6d. It was estimated that £300 would bo required to be advanced, the amount actually advanced being £355 17s. The estimated debit balance was £G53 4s. 4d., the actual £582 155./ lOd. Water Account.—After paying interest and charging the account with £500 towards tlie working expenses it was estimated that the credit balance would' be £353 12s. Id., and the actual balance £303 17s. 3d'. Gas Account.—This department has required very close attention to ensure payment of accounts by a number of consumers. During the year the sum. of £3134 12s. 9d. was expended, including gas purchased, £1945 Bs. 9d. (estimate £1943 15s). Wages, material, and meterreading, £313 Bs. ,7d. (estimate (£550); meters and repairs, £20G 14s. 9d. (estimate £G0). On the receipts side, gas sold, £3293 lGs. : . 7d. (estimate, £3227). Ratepayers.—There are 1182 I'atepayers on the rate-book, and the rateable properties number 273. Tho population of the borough is about 4300. Councillor Roots, in moving the adoption of the report, congratulated tho Mayor, and staff on tho excellent management. In reply the Mayor said that he had received great assistance from the members of the council and tho staff.
