HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), "-and Councillors Knight, Kempthorne, Clendon, Roots, Dawson, Ball, and Hobbs. Permission was granted tho Wellesloy Club to play a cricket match on tho Hutt Recreation Ground with, officers of H.M.S. New Zealand on Saturday, April 10. • The Department of Lands and Survey advised that there was ho power to tako further action in- the matter of rates owing on, Section 83, Normandale.—Received. Tho, Hospital Board's inspector reported one case of enteric fever iu the borough. Mr. W. Drewitt complained that a number' of horses we're turned loose on the road, at Alicetown at, night. It was resolved' to inform Mr. Drewitt that the ranger would be instructed to prosecute. One ratepayer .was granted assistance to connect with tho drainage scheme. •Mr. Dallenger asked the council to deposit any superfluous spoil they liavo on his property.—Resolved to reply that tho council had no spoil. Tho Dominion Ferrolith .Company forwarded a sum of ,£lO in payment of timber from Melling Bridge. Tho same company advised that they were about to start a factory for the manufacture o£ ferro-concreto articles, and asked the council to consider the question of laying the borough water on to the works.—Referred to engineer for report. Mr. J. Mil-field applied for a permit under Section 4 of the draipago and sanitary by-law to lay a drain to serve his two shop? on Main Road. Tho application was granted subject to tho owner paying costs of agreement. Tho Australia Public Works Department inquired whether the council would purchase hardwood timber from them from tinio to time. It was resolved to inform the Department that tho council did not require much timber of tho class mentioned. . Mr. N. C. Watson complained that his property had been depreciated by the lowering of tho road level, due to tho construction of .the eastern approach of the Hutt pipe bridge. Mrs; E. Pyne agreed to tho council's terms for laying a water-pipe under the footpath in Victoria Street.—Received. ! It was decided to leave the communi : cation from ,th-« Conciliation Commissioner, in regard to an application _on the part of the General Labourers' Union, for an increase to Is. 3d. per hour, and a six-hour day (when working in wet), in , the/Mayor's; hands to confer with other Mayors on'tho question of taking joint action. " • ' It was resolved to inform Mr. Allen in regard to removing debris from his property,' that the council could not recognise liny liability. In' regard' to tho "motor traps" re-. ■ cently set up by the council, tho Works 5 Committee reported that the evidence .be . submitted to tho borough solicitor with a 1 view to selecting those offenders against , whom proceedings should bo instituted, - and that, in all other cases jvhere Hie - speed-limit was exceeded,'the offenders be . written to and cautioned.
