BRITISH SAILORS' GALLANT RESCUE.
AN ADVENTURE ON THE ATLANTIC. Captain Norman M'Leod, of tho American steamer Blackburn, reports to tho American authorities' tho gallant rescuo of some of his crow by Captain Leask and tho crow of tho London steamer Tiverton. Ho states that they had bad weather from the time they left Baltimore, and on January 26 tho main, mizaon, and -spanker masts went by the board, mnt--1 ing big holes in the after deck. ■ His "crew, after working for four days to keep hor up, wero about to abandon hope, when tlioy saw a steamer's lights. They signalled, and tho Tiverton camo as close as safety would permit, but her commander gallantly agreed to stand by J until daylight in the hope tho weather" might improve. After hours of hard fighting for a position, Captain Leask was able to tako advantage of a slight lull, which, however, did not allow him to-come alongside, but a rescuo party camo in a boat bringing lifo-prosorvere. A line was thrown. "Tlion wo had," says Captain M'Leod, "to jump overboard and be hauled into the lifeboat, two of . iny men refused to do so, and tho remainder wero with difficulty hauled • aboard the Tiverton." Tho. lifeboat was smashed and had to b9 abandoned, and in the night the vessels became separated, and it is feared two men (tho cook and engineer) have ' been lost with the derelict.
