THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

0 Those citizens who realise the dangers, attached to Labour-Socialist dominance in the management of the city's affairs will feel themselves . under a deep obligation to Messrs. Veitch and Hill for the sacrifice they. have made in withdrawing their candidature for the City Council. _ Both these gentlemen, from their business experience and enterprises, might have been expected to render good service on tjie council, and their withdrawal is no indication of weakness on their part, and cannot be taken as a guide to their possible chances of success had they stood. . Apparently they recognise, as must be recognised by all who have given' any thought to the question, that the excessive number of candidates outjsidc the Labour-Socialist ticket is 'simply playing into the hands of that ticket by splitting the votes of those opposed to it. The supporters of Messrs. 'Veitch and Hill will no doubt regret their retirement from the contest, but the gentlemen named have set a very fine example to some of the other candidates who can well afford to wait for some future occasion on which to gratify their quite legitimate municipal-as-pirations. It is, of course, asking a-grea-t deSI of them, but ifc means a. great deal to the city which they are anxious to serve.
