MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) . Masterton, April 0. ; The school excursion train from Wairarapa to Wellington nest week will bs largely patronised, but .'a great many children will, bo prevented from'seeing the battleship, owing to the Railway Bepartment' having refused to allow parents to travel with their children. Mr. C. C. Koss left Masterton for Melbourne to-day to under-go treatment at a specialist's institute for a long-standing complaint. Ho expects to bo absent for several months. The Akitio County Council has expressed its approval of the proposal of the Government to import hardwood timbers for the use of local bodies in bridge construction work. Hockey and football will be started hero tins week, and present indications are tliat these forms of sport will be popular during the winter. A gcod deitl of interest is' being centred in the forthcoming' municipal elections. It is probable that the Labour party will run a ticket; but the tradesmen of the town are also bringing out a strong team. 1 From present indications it would appear that the Mayor (Mr. J. M. Coradine) is to bo ; given .a "walk-over." The half-holiday question is exciting a good deal of controversy. A poll on the proposal that Saturday shall be tlie day of closing is to be taken on municipal election day. There is a strong feeling, however, that the present arrangements should not be disturbed. v . . ==—--
