On Saturday morning ho will preside at a meeting of the Executive Council, and in the afternoon will exterid an official welcome to Captain Jffalsey, R.N., the officers, and crew of 11.M.5. New Zealand .on behalf of the Dominion. His Excellency will leave again for Auckland on Sunday night. The Hon. W. F. Masscy (Prime Minister) '■ returned to Wellington yesterday. The Hon. 11. H. Rhodes is at Ohristchurch. The other Cabinet Ministers are in Wellington. > The Hon. James Allen is to return to Now Zealand by way of Canada, where lie is to visit a number of educational institutions, notably agricultural colleges. Mr. Allen is duo to reach tho Dominion early in June. Tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, Minister for Customs in New Zealand, was entertained at luncheon by the Federal Government at Melbourne! on April 3. Among thoso present were: The Minister for Customs (Mr. Tudor) and Mrs. Tudor; the Postmaster-General (Mr. , Frazcr), tho State Premier (Mr. Murray), tho Lord Mayor (Councillor Hennessy), and the Lady Mayoress, Senator Findley, Dr. Gilruth, Administrator of tho Northern Territory, and Mrs. Gilruth; Mr. G. P. Milne, British Trade Commissioner; Mrs. W. M. Hughes, Mrs. O'Malley, Mr. AV. D. Montgomery, secretary to the New Zealand Customs Department; and Mr. H. J. Manson (New Zealand representative) and Mrs. Manson. Mr. G. It. Bitchie, a director of tlie Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, arrived in Wellington by tho Mccraki from Sydney yesterday. Tho Rev. T. F. Jones, Methodist minister, who has been transferred to Birkenhead, Auckland, was given a public sendoif at Levin on Tuesday evening, and presented with several theological works and a purse of sovereigns. Fitzgerald will nol bo candidates for re-election to the Hospital Beard. The news has been received in Wellington of the death by drowning at Rio Grande,' on February 24, of Mr. J. M. C. Brown, son of tho late Mr. Brown, formerly an officer of the Government steamer Hinemoa (who was drowned off tho East Cape). The deceased, who was a member of tho Institute of Marine Engineers, was latterly fourth engineer of the Devonshire. ■ Mrs. Johnson, of Northland, was the winner of tho fifth prize in tho Citizens' Carnival art union. Mr. Pirie, of Wellington, wlio has been' on a trip to Sydney, returned by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. J. Clement C'ollard, head of the well-known piano firm of that name, arrived in Auckland on Tuesday by tho Zcalandia from Vancouver, on a pleasure trip round tho world. Mr. Collard was in Auckland some 22 years ago, and the great progress which ti\e city and port have made in the last (wo decades caused him to litter many exclamations ot' surprise as tho vessel steamed up tlie harbour. A Press Association messago from Melbourne states that Mr. J. W. Arthur, of New Zealand, has been appointed one of the assistant-surveyors of tho Northern Territory staff. . Captain J. D. S. Phillips, wlio arrived in Auckland with tbo Zcalandia on Tuesday, was presented with a handsonio clock by the passengers of that steamer while the vessel was making her last call at Honolulu. Thoso making the presentation remarked that, as somo changes were to take placo among tho steamers on tho } nncouycr run when tho Niagara camo into the trade, it was thought possible that Captain Phillips might not be coming that} way again. Mr. N. Pulton, Government Dairy Instructor at Stratford, has been granted • s,x months' leave of absencc, and, accompanied by Mrs. Pulton, will sail from Auckland lor Vancouver on the Makura on.l'i'idoy. Ho proposes making a brief stay m Canada and visiting various parts of the States before going on to tho BritIsles. Mr. and Mrs, Pulton will also visit tho island of Jersey and Denmark. 1 hey will return via tho Suez Canal, and Mr. Pulton expects to be back intimo ior the busy season. Jn August next the Rev. Robert Russell, M.A., of St. Andrew's Church, Durban, Natal, contemplates visiting New Zealand, New South Wales, iiid Queenslaud. Mr. 0. Bunz, Vice-Consul for Germany in Sydney, who intends proceeding to Europe via. Java, will leave Sydney by the ltoyal Packet S.N. Company's Van Linschoteu on April 18 for Batavia. Mr. Robert Porter, ono of the pioneer pressmen of Now South Wales, died at Cionulla on April 2, in his 1 78th year. Deceased, who arrived in Sydney from England in 1855, established tho first newspaper at Mudges in 1857, and in 1871 started tho "Wellington Gazette," which lie conducted till about seven years ago, when ho disposed of his interests.
