CITIZENS' CARNIVAL.
DRAWING OP ART UNION. Between two ol' three hundred people were present jit ine 'town-.Hail last evening, when the arc union in connection wnn the recent-Citizens' Carnival was drawn, under the superintendence of uic Muyor (Mr. D. ji'Laren). ,Before the urawnig, Mr. M'Laren , briefly announced the system that would be employed. "Anyone would think," he saiu, "that we.'were going in for the butter-milk busiuess' to see this great churn (a'liugo barrel ' suspended on a trestle), but owing to the large number of ticKets sold tne secretary thought it necesshry to have it'made so that all could be fairly dealt by. The prizes were: Pirst, ibU; second, ,£2O; third, UI15; fourth, ifill); and fifth; <85, which were represented by .' tlio .gold nuggets cxhiuited on the table. They represented tho number of ' sovereigns mentioned melted down,. permission to do so having been obtained rrom the Minister for Internal Affairs. The system of drawing ■ was that the butts of all the tickets were placed in the barrel, and he would ask a boy aud girl from the audiience to do the drawing, one to draw the marble from the bottle (of which were live), and the other to draw . the tickets." n iU'his'system''meeting.< with the approval :of those present, tie big barrel was. given' a few .vigorous turns by the secretary and Mr. A. Paap'e, and tne; drawing proceeded. • Great,, excitement, was caused by the fact'. 1 marblo was the last to pome out. Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5 came but, strangely , enough, in that order. - The following were the winning numbers aud the winners (as far as could be ascertained last'evening):— . First prize, No. 9191 (C. Gason, Lower Pitt Street, Wadestown). Second prize, No. dSlifi (Miss D. Law- ■. rence,- 71 Waripori street. ' Third prize, No. y2,517 (Robert Yeats, Moxham Avenue, Kilbirnie). Fourth prize, No. 2630 (Mr. Oborn, 213 Riddiford Street)..; Fift'h prize, No. 14,680. The name of tho fifth prize-ticket was : scratched out, and another was written i the ticket on tho white edge, hut ] only tho address, "Northland," was vis- i iblo. The owner of the ticket will doubt- 1 less be traced through the full name and i address .which is l scratched out, but is < quite readable. '
