An unknown Arctic continent,' in quest of which Vikjalmar Stefansson, the explorer who discovered the wliito llskimo at the outsets of this year, is about ,to set out, may ho added to Canadian, territory it Stefansson succeeds. The, discovery of such land would realise his belief in the existence of a continent in the l'olar region. Mr. Borden' is said to have offered agrant'of ,£15,C00 to Mr. Stefansson if ho I will conduct an expedition under the flag and auspices of tlio Dominion, instead of tlio United States, so that Canada would have tlio entire management of tho enterprise. He had arranged ' tho project under the financial bacltinj; of tho National Geographic Society and the American' Museum of Natural History, and has asked theso two bodies to release' him from the undertaking as ho wishes to accept Canada's offer. ' Both bodies are willing to waivo their claims on Mr. Stefansso'n' on condition that the Canadian grant'shall ho made immediately effective so that the explorer could start for tho. • Arctic in June. '" _ "'• Only scientific .values aro likely to result from tho expedition. There can be no '.question of territorial rights. Tho Borden Government evidently feels that the undiscovered continent should Ipe annexed .to, tlie Dominion. Its theoretical boundaries pla'ce it north of tho beautiful sea. whicJi is,north of tho continental shore.from point Barrow, Alaska, to Capo Bathurst, Canada. / , ,
