ANTARCTIC HERO RISKED LIFE FOR PENGUIN'S EGGS.
Major E. II! Hills president of tho Eoyal Astronomical Society, in proposing the toast of "The Junion Institution of Engineers" at the annual dinner, mado a reference to the pursuit of what "practical" men call "useless" knowledge, and said that among those five bodies now dead at tho Antarctic was that of Dl. Wilson, the naturalist of the expedition. One of his objects was to study the <"Rgs and the embryology of the Emperor Penguin. The Empress Penguin had the unfortunate habit of laying her eggs in the middle of winter on ice. Two winters ago Dr. Wilson and three companions set out on a five days' journey in the darkness of the I'olar night.
