James Courtney appeared for sentence on two charges of the theft of clothing from city lodging-houses. .Ho.was also charged with having stolen an overcoat, which belonged to Georgo William Chapman, from the Central Coffee Palace. , To this third charge Courtney pleaded guilty. . Chief-Detective Broberg said that Court-' ney. arrived in New Zealand lost August and already had been convicted of theft. His Worship imposed a sentence of six months' imprisonment. . John Glanvillo O'Donnell, a youth, pleaded guilty to a charge of having absconded from tho Burnham Industrial School, and also to a charge of having stolen a watch valued at £'2, 10s. belonging to Leonard Sullivau. • Chief-Detectivo Broberg stated • that theboy had been admitted to Bum ha 111 in 1804, and had escaped from the institution on March 30. He hod conic to Wellington, and while here had entered a house andl stolen the watch mentioned in tho charge. His Worship dismissed tho first charge, and, respecting the second (that of having used, threatening language), ho fined Robertson 55., with expenses 19s. "OBSTRUCTION" OF POLICE. William Jjames Hamilton was accused of having obstructed Sergeant V. R. Taylor, who was arresting a man on Saturday night. ■ Sergea.it Taylor and Constable MoVonev gave evidence to the effect that Hamilton twico caught hold of tho man, who was bemg arrested, and endeavoured to pull him away. Hamilton stated that he did not mako a serious attempt to lelease tho man, who was a friend of his. Ho asked tho police to let the man go, saying that ho was taking him home. His Worship: What you should have done was gone to the station and bailed your frwad out, You will be fined ,£2. DRINK CASES. For insobriety, Lena White was fined 10s.; Michael M'Mchon, 10s.; Andrew ' Anderson, Jtl, Neil Stewart, 10s.; Alex- i tinder M'Donald,>£l, and prohibited; and John Mitchell was remanded till April 14 for medical treatment. For having broken a prohibition order, Arthur Stevvns wos fined £3. ■ l ,vo J''hition order was issued against I Arthur Herbert Howell. Howell's mother made the application for' tho order. j
