Joliu Peter Lannigon, a single man, aged 27, died last night on- the l'etauo Road. lie had been out nil day ill a motor. boat, which broko down on tho return. A high wind drove the launch up tho inner harbour, wlioro it went ashore. Lannigun attempted to keep it iloatihg. An hour later ho showed slgiia of collapse, and his mates carried him to tho slnfre, but' ho died botoro niedicil assistance could bo obtained. The night was wild and cold" and wet. ' It is thought death resulted from heart failure brought about by exposure. CHARRED BODY IN CARAVAN.' Feilding, April 7. Homo boys out shooting in .the Carnar< von district, saw a lire m tho distance at 3 o'cluck on Sunday morning. In tho afternoon, passing in the vicinity, they liiade an inspection, and found that a caravan on wheels had been destroyed. On examining tho remains, one boy, \Y. Holnian, was horrified to find the charred remains of a man lying across a stretcher. The man hud evidently been suffocated while asleep. Tho policc are investigating, but the body has not yet been idoutilied. • Later.The body has been identified as that of N. Miil'shall, who was engaged on a roadmetalling contract. WESTPORT B-BSIDEKT'S DEATH. Dr. M'Artlmr, S.M., opened an' inquest yesterday concerning tho death of Alexander Stitt, a Westport hololkeepcr, 05 years of age, who died on Saturday" last.' It was stated at tho inquiry that, Mr. Stitt fell oil' a trnmcar in Wellington on April 2 iind sustained a broken leg. Dr. I'. 1!. Woodhouse, of the hospital staff, deposed that when Mr. Stilt was admitted to tho institution his right leg was broken ; above tho ankle, and ho.bpro several bruises. The . leg , was set, lnit gangrene, set in .in the foot, and ,8)1 amputation became necessary.: An anae&lhclic; was administered,, but shortly 'alter this eommciicement of the operation the patient's heart began to fail, and tho operation had to .bo. abandoned. ; Mr. Stitt was put to bed, and he died shortly ' afterwards of cardiac failure. nis heart had been bad all along. , Tho inquest was adjourned till this morning, for the purpose of obtaining the testimony of a .witness who could not be present, yesterday.
