« SOME RESOLUTIONS. SUGGESTION TO THE CARNIVAL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the AVellington Zoological Society was held in Mr. Castle's room at Newtown on Friday evening. Several important; matters were freely discussed, and the following resolutions were carried: (1) That as one of the objects of 'tho society was to extend the popular study of zoology, and the society by a great effort induced Parliament and tho Wellington City Council 'to legaliso the right of all persons under tho age of fifteen years to have free access to the Zoo, the society shall try to arrange for a large concert, to be hold-in the Town Hall, to aid tho library funds of the several schools of the city. Tho net profit on the concert to bo devoted to tho library funds, pro rata, according to the number of tickets sold by or for the several schools, and 'the only consideration to be received by the society shall Ixs the favour of being allowed to submit to the headmasters a list of a few books on'zoology that a committee, to bo appointed by the society, may ask tho representatives of the_ schools to place in the school libraries. ■(2) That this meeting having hoard read the letter received by the secretary from a gentleman now resident in Auckland, who is a corresponding member of an outside zoological society, asks our secretary •to assure llic esteemed correspondent that we welcome his suction, and will cive due consideration to it. And, moreover, ihat wo respectfully ask him to grant us tho pleasure of enrolling him to bo a corresponding moml>er of our society, pending tho formation of a kindred and afmialo society in Auckland, and probably the formation of other such societies in other pcrts of the Dominion, The meeting asks our secretary to inform our correspondent that our society would like to see a good central Zoo for the whole Dominion established in "Wellington* with a branch m each of the three other ci'tiesAucklatid, Christchurch, and Dunedin— that in consideration of tho educational advantages a Zoo supplies, the Government of tho Dominion should grant assistance towards (he acquirement, maintonnnce. and interchange of animals, and ! a .o present ivaste by duplicating,.overlapping, and jealousy, or unsoemlv rivalry, on advisory society similar'to tho \\cllington Zoological Society should be each'of the cities naiiied. (.1) 1 hat, seeing that mi charge can be made for admission to 'the Zoo on Sundays, this society submit to the Wellington Guy Council the opinion that the socieVy should be. allowed to take a collection in N T <?ivtqwn Park on any Sunday afternoon on which, a band not subsidised by the City Council for that Sundnv will gratuitously play for the society, provided that the society shall not take more than one collection there in a month. (G) That-the society is glad .that the., art competitions that were have been started, approves of the extension, of time for receiving pictures, and leaves to tho Competitions Committee last appointed the arranging for an exhibition, of pictures. (7) That the society is glad that the flamingoes and beavers ordered may be expected to arrive soon and the chairman and secretary of tho society are hereby authored to recc-ive them and present them to the Zoo authorities. . (8) That as the American summer, or wood, duck is'considered to bo almost, if not quite, as beautiful as the mandarin duck, and (lie mandarin ducks presented by this society to tho Zoo have been greatly admired, the society would like to obtain for -tho Zo'n so'ni" summer ducks I and resblves that if tho City Council will purchase a pair of ocelots, and get them brought from Kansas City to the Zoo, tho Zoological Society will purchase two pairs of wood ducks and arrango for them to be brought with the ocelots. (9) That this meeting hereby congratulates Councillor Frost on the success of. his effort to, retain the lioness in the' Zoo and compliment's Curator Langridpe and his assistants on tho results of their assiduous attention and sensible treatment in rearing the young swans and tho young lions, and bringing into such splendid condition the pHunago of tho iargo number of birds now all in splendid condition in the Zoo. One of the schoolmasters present-men-tioned that Mr. Castle's children had evidently caught the spirit of their father, ns they were getting up a bazaar to which' they were earnestly inviting their schoolmates and other friends. The meeting expressed warm approval of the conduct of the young people. Mr. Castle, in thanking the meeting for the expression,' said that the effort of the children to raiso a contribution to the tiger fund was especially pleasing as it had beep purely of their own initiative.
