NOTES ON THE RACING.
POTOA AN ABSENTEE. SOME,HOT FAVOURITES BEATEN. As on 'tho' first day, only "'tliree horses ivero able to complete the steeplechase course, and Grit Lawless, who was outpaced, the : whole way, gained third money by safo jumping. It was a good, betting 'face,'Sunrnyj . Karimoi, and Fireworks being all well supported. Over the last milo-the. race-resolved itself into a struggle between Fireworks and Sunray. 1 Tiio latter : was nearly down five furlongs from home, but Futcher made a fine recovery, and soon overhauled Fireworks. Tho pair raced at tho last fence together. They bumped a few strides from £ho fence, and then Sunray swerved towards the inner end of tho hurdle, causing Fireworks to conio down over tho wing. This left Sunray to win easily from Karimoi and Grit Lawless. A meeting of stewards was held immediately niter tlio race. It was subserviently announced that 11. Futcher, rider of tho winner, was fined XI lor careless riding. Byron and Sea Queen, who both claimed engagements in tho Autumn Handicap later in the day, were withdrawn from tlio Hutt Handicap. This left fifteen runners to go to tlio post. • Lockwood, with Oliver in the saddle, was made a very strong favourite, but although th« half-brother to Porirua and Sir Frisco'ran a good race, he was beaten out of a place. Tho finish, however, was a very closc one, and tho favourite was not far from tho winner. Aloha made nearly.all tlio,.running, but lier stable;inate,ri Stcßi.\pr,V beat her at the finish, siml ;thevlatteiv was in turn beaten by Negative and Falsetto. The winner, Negative, was the outsider but one of the lSg field, and paid the biggest dividend of tlio meeting, while Falsetto and Step, ncy woro- rank outsiders. On the fivfit day,"'Negative (while again a'big outsider) finished fourth behind Mon Ami,' Lodkwdod, and Aloha in the "\Yaiwetu Handicap. On Saturday lie met •all three,on better terms, and, with an extra furlong to cover ho was able to reverse., He carried a little mora' rtionoy than on the'opening day, and- would no doubt liavo been much more "heavily'backed had his rider been better known. . . .. Another ,good, favourite was defeated in the Muritai Handicap, when ' Awahou failed, to .gain -a place. Ho was slow to commence, and, aßliough he- mado up a good deal of ground over the last couple of fiirlqngs,'he could get 110 nearer than fourth. 'The winner proved to bo Portland Lady, who rail second in the milo hack rare on the first , day. The furlong shorter, suited her well on Saturday, and she easily withstood a final challenge : from' Tetikura, who scarcely .ran as well as his form in the Railway Handicap 011 Wednesday suggested lie would. Cliamanade appeared to have a chance at ono stage, but he received a bump that was severe enough to settle hifi'prospects. ' Both Portland Lady and Tetikura came out again during the afternoon. Portland Lady carried a penalty into third place in the Belmont Handicap, but 'Tetikura made no show at all' in tho open six-furlong handicap. All the acceptors went to the post for the Autumn Handicap, Bronze being made a big favourite. Sir Knox, who had tlio services of L. Wilson, was also in .keen demand, and there were a thousand tickets opposito his Minnie when the machino closed down. It was anticipated ;■ that he would seo the distauco out as well as any horse in the race. Some-
' tiling iu tho nature of another surprise was in store for backers, as Mira, who was always in a handy portion, took charge of affairs three furlongs from home, and just lasted long enough to defeat the favourite l,y a neck. Tho victory of tho grey horse was fully anticipated by his parly. Mira carries tho samo colours as the successful Auckland performers, Bleriot, Merry Roe, and Wuiowcra, but is trained at Trentham by .T. W. Lowe. The latter has won many good races with other of Mr. F. Hall's horses, notably Gold Lace, Iranui, ami Obligant. Bronze doe? not sprint anything liko as well as she usjil to do last season, and it is her inability to hold Iter position in the early stages of a race that Ims been responsible for her defeat in three big handicaps recently. Tho game manner in which she finishes her races shows that although she has been racing from the early part: of the season, G. Price has managed to keep her wonderfully fresh and well. Sir Knox, who finished third after having to make up a lot of his ground on the outside of the field, received a kick at the post which did not improvo his chances. Dearest and Undecided both shaped creditably, the former being responsible for the solid pace set. Salzburg and Briar Patch, representatives of two successful southern stables, carried slightly more than half the money invested on ilin machine for the Pacific Handicap. Both registered smart performances. Salzburg won after an interesting bout with the Porirua candidate, Pavlova, while Briar Patch finished third after. meeting with interference. Underordinary conditions iu running, it looked as if Briar Patch's pull in the Weights would have enabled her to defeat Salzburg. A meeting of stewards was held after tho race, and after an inquiry, lasting nearly two hours, it .was decided to impose ,i' three months' term of disqualification ou If. 'Berry, rider of Anguish. Bon Rove's withdrawal from tho St. Legcr- Stakes left only three starters. It then became mainly a question of how far Bon Tori would finish in front of Canute and Haskayno. The distance was about four lengths, but it was a very easy victory, and Bon Ton paid a remarkably good dividend when all things aro considered. A. Oliver, who rode the winner, had' not previously been successful in tho race. Potoa, who promised to start favomite in the Suburban Handicap, was withdrawn on account of the fact that he had been a' poor feeder since the first day's racing. The severe struggle in the Thompson Handicap had evidently had its effect on the. handsome ,-ou of Monoform. In his absence Patronale was made u solid favourite and little Bell managed to ride him home a head in front of a bunched-fitld. Patronale was not started 'on the opening day as no suitable lightweight was available, and Trainer E. Barlow declined to allow the Patronus goldins to be ridden by an inexperienced lad. The concluding event was the greatest betting race of tho meeting, and Ladoga, the first day's winner', carried more money than any other single performer on the two days. His' supporters were doomed to disappointment as the favourite failed to gain a place. Submersion winning in a close finish with Suratura. Winning jockeys at the meeting were: C. Emerson, thrre; L. Wilson, two; A. Oliver, two: R. Bern-, two; 11. Lowe. O'Connell, B. Deeley, H. FutchT, G. Francis, F.I E. Jones, and W. Bell, one each. WINNING OWNERS.
