Archbishop Hatliew was" consecrated nt Utrecht by Archbishop Gul in" 1908. Ho is a liueal descendant, of Sir David Mathew. of Llandaff, standard-bearer to Edward IV in 1161. Ho was the author of a number of > books, an'cl joilit editor, with tho late Father Tyrrell of tho third' edition of Dr. 11. C. Lea's "History of Sacerdotal Celibacy," and ivroto articles for tho "English Historical Ucvicw," tho "Reunion Magazine," etc. He originated tho idea of keeping' will animqls in captivity without tho employment of cages in. zoological gardcfis, - tho • plan having been adopted in Germany with great success, anil is now being tried' iir the London Zoo. Tho Archbishop also succeeded in acclimatising'tho' siiturepOid apes 'in England.
