Lord Goorgo Hamilton, in presiding at •the anflual meeting of tho Bank of Australasia, commented on the fact that tho imports had for the first timo exceeded tho' exports ns conclusive proof of Australia's and New Zealand's enterprise. Tho increasing productiveness was, moreover, associated with a great expansion in immigration to Australia. Bankers had watched tho development of tho Commonwealth Bank with interest, hut thoy had no apprehension, nor did they regard it a:i an unfriendly competitor.
