Tile 'Sydney Morning Herald," in commending the proposed increase in tho Australian army, says:—"lt is an axiom that the existence of the Empire depends primarily on adequate and efficient naval forces, and tho presence in Australian waters of tho magnificent cruiser New Zealand reminds us of the share tho Dominions are taking in the burden of naval defence. But it is nono the less necessary that tli.ero should bo adequate armies on land."
