THE PUBLIC SERVICE. .
♦ NEW REGULATIONS GIVE SATISFACTION. So far as can bo ascertained, the now 1, regulations issued by tho Public Service' Commissioner have given very general satisfaction to officers ,in the Civil Servico. Bogys concerning new and dreadful forms of examinations that have boon raised of late seem to liavo vanished into thin air. Tho provisions concerning sick leave are admitted to be liberal, and the increase from J2OO lo X2CO of the salary which an officer in tho general Cjvil Servico can attain beforo passing the Senior Civil Service examination seems to bo very .much appreciated. „A. reporter who spoke to u number of Civil Servants after t'lio provisions of tho now regulations were made known failed !o come abross a single ofliccr who declared himself dissatisfied with tho regulations. In every case approval was expressed. A prominent official of the Civil Service Association, who probably comes into touch with ns many Civil Servants as any man in New Zealand, expressed , a similar opinion when lie was spoken'to" yesterday. . "As far as I can gather," he said, "the new regulations are considered quite satisfactory. I lmvp not had an opportunity of. discussing the regulations in detail, but tlmt is tho opinion expressed by all tho Civil Servants with whom I 'have spoken on the subject." , It lmd been 'suggested, Urn samp official remarked, (hat some of the regulation* liotnlily those inferring to sick leave, were , so liberal that somo difficulty might ly> experienced ill carryine them' into effect with tho 'existing staffs. Thorn were other' factors to lw considered, however. It was admitted that, in many branches of the service there was a great deal of unnecessary _ book-keeiiing, and , to some extent antiquated methods prevailed which could easily be brought up to date nun simplilled. Reform in these directions w.iu.d eliminate a Certain amount of useless work and so afford latitude ioi' more liberal working conditions.
