PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnigh'tly meeting of the Pelono Borough Council was held in the local Town Hall last evening. The following were present: The Mayor (Mr. M'Hwan), and Councillors List, Piper, Brocklebank, Short, Trueman, and Cox. A letter was received from the Assist-ant-Under-S.ecretnry of the Post Office Department concerning the lighting of the I'etonc Post Office. The letter stated that the present system lias obtained for years without complaints. The porch light'is turned on full from dusk until after 8.30 p.m., when it is reduced to a pilot light. The lobby light has not been used for years. . When it was used it was continually tampered with, and the last mtiil for Potoue, which readies the office at 7.15 p.m., is disposed of long before the light in the porch is reduced. The majority of the fourteen boxholders clear their boxes before 8 p.m. In the circumstances it was not considered that any alteration in pro-sent lighting arrangements was required. Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., wrote regarding the alterations to the Petono Post Office, stating that ho had personally urged on the Government tho necessity for a new post office for Petono. Mr. AV. L. Meek wrote, advising that tho plato of one of the front springs of his motor-car was broken in crossing ono of the obstructions laid down upon tho llutt Road, and that he intends to claim on the council for the cost of a new plate.—Tho council decided they would discuss Mr.. Meek's claim wliou they got it. The Town Clerk, AVellington, wrote with respect to tho' road from Waiwetn Bridge to Lowry Bay Road, stating that his council will jirrango for the dedication required by. Section 5 of tho agreement entered into for the construction of tho Hutt aiul Waiwetu Bridges.—Tho letter was received. , Having previously given notice, Councillor Piper moved:—(l) That in view of the Plumbers' Registration Act, 1912, coming into forco on April 1, the engineer bo authorised to renew existing plumbers' licenses, free of all fees. (2) That as misfitting is now defined by the labour law as part of a plumbers-' trade, existing licenses be renewed on tho snme conditions as plumbers' licenses. Tho motion led to a discussion as to the opwers of tho council under the new Act.. ■ Eventually the Mayor opined that the matter was beyond tho jurisdiction of the council, and accordingly rilled tho first part of Councillor Piper's motion out of order. Councilor Piper then withdrew the second part of his motion, ' as ho pointed out that .it'"hinged" on the first part, and that part being ruled out of order, the second part was "as dead as Caesar's wife." Councillor Piper then moved that tho clerk bo instructed to vestigate the matter, and find out the true position of. affairs frmn the head of tho new board.—This motion was earried.
