MOTOR CAR FALLS OVER A BANK.

H.AWER A RESIDENT INJURED. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) ' ' Patea, March 21). A serious motor accident occurred on Ball Read yesterday afternoon, resulting in severe injuries to Mr. H. Graves, a well-known resident of llawera, and formerly of 'Patea. It appears that Mr. Graves and Mr. Valentine, of Mnnutahi, were journeying to Alton by motor, Mr. Graves driving. Whsn rounding a bend on the Ball Road, known as Alton Gorge, a dray and four horses engaged in metalling work for tho Patea County Council, was met; with. Mr. Graves was keeping to tho outside of the road, and by some means or other, in trying to avoid the team, the car was driven too close to'the side of the gtUly and commenced to topple over on its side. A largo t'oitpi bush arrested, the downward progress of the car for a. moment, but the strain proving too great, the . bush gave way autK the car turned a double somersault,. landing 'at the bottom of the gully, 30 or 10 feet below, with Mr. Ciiaves underneath. Mr. Valentine, was fortunately thrown clear and escaped with a few scratches. Willing hands were quickly on the scene and lost no time in extricating .Mr. Graves I'rojn beneath the car. In the meantime medical aid was summoned, and on examination jit was'found that besides having several 'ribs broken, Mr. Graves had also sustained a fractured eollflrhono. The. sufferer vas placed on a stretcher and taken to the liall Road stAtion, and afterwards conveyed by mail train -1" llawera. The car still lies at Hie bottom of the gully, partially covered with fern, and ot'ier scrub, but to what extenl it is damaged there is uo available information. Tho two' victims of the nccidenf had a most, miraculous escape.
