HARVEST FESTIVAL.
SERVICES AT ST. MARK'S. Harvest, festival services wore conducted yesterday at St. Mark's Church in Susj sex* Square. In (lie morning, the Rev. A. M. Johnfou conducted, the service and preached lo a large congregation from the text: ."Whatsoever a man soweth, he shall also reap.'' The evening service, which attracted a very large congregation, was conducted by tho vicar (the Rev. C. i\ Askew); who took as his text, "When ye reap tho harvest of your land, ye shall not fully reap tho corners of your field." These words, said Mr. Aslteiv, emphasised tho necessity of making a certain provision for tho poor, and inculcated other lessons as well. The injunction regarding tho corners of tho field might bo applied to one's timo or. money, in fact, to any of the good gifts that me|i and women enjoyed. Tlieso were not their own entirely, and in utilising tlieni they should have always sonio thought for 'others. Another contention stressed by tho preacher was that auyono who took his life in earnest' would of necessity be content; to leave sonic corners to be garnered by others. Illustrating this particular point. Mr, Askew cited tho case of Henry Martin,- a famous missionary who laboured in liula. For a long time, said the preacher, Henry Martin seemed to make absolutely no progress. In great degree it was left to others who came after him to garner the fruits of his pioneer efforts. It was possible, Mr. Askew remarked in further developing liis theme, .that jieoplo might be misunderstood, ond accused of being careless be-, cause they did not gather the fullest possible harvest, but they would only bo so necused by those who were forgetful of God's provision for the poor. Tho church was. beautifully decorated for the services by the Indies of tho Decorating Guild, under Miss; Holm. Tho music was appropriate to the season.
