Visitors to Kawau during the Easter holidays stato that the presenco of a large number of sharks,in the vicinity.of the island was quite sufficient to ensure cautious bathing.'. While fishing ,for schnapper in Kawau Bay on Good Friday 'a party on the launch Gretchen hooked a 9ft. shark ,on a strong schnapper line. When brought to tho surface the big fish was harpooned, and the contents of a revolver were fired into him. Quite a host of amateur photographers surrounded the launch to' secure "snails"' of the shark before it was towed into' deep water and cast off. 'It .is reported that the crew of the Inun'ch Marero caught 12 sharks outside Bon Accord (Kawau) on Easter Monday while fishing for smaller fry.
