Greonwoodj in a letter to the "Sydney Morning Herald," sayS: "From information received, it appears that the impression is abroad that I won a heavy stake from the bookmakers on Valido. I most emphatically contradict that impression. My only investment two pounds ten shillings, I had neither directly nor. indirectly qny interest in any other wager, nor have I ever made or participated, in a bet with a bookmaker exceeding five pounds, by which I benefited.. I have absolute confidence in my trainer's discretion, and he knows I am- a non-betting oWner.' He was enabled to enter and run my horse in my absence the same as he would in my presence."

A. Oliver, B. TJeelcy, 1,. Wilson, S.Roid and several other good horsemen <iro assisting at the track gallops at Trentham. Trainers will no doubt be glad to avail themselves of tho forvices of these riders. R. Berry, tho local lightweight, will no doubt be pleased to see the visiting jockeys there, as ho does mora than his share of riding in tho track gallops between the meetings. Trainer G. Price arrived here from lticcarlon yesterday morning. His team tor Trentham will bo reinforced by arrivals from Awnpuni.

Einperador and Culprit have been accepted for in tho Railway Handicap, as well as in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham next Wednesday. Awahou, who is among tho acceptors for the Thompson ifandicap, also claims an engagement in tho Waiwetu Handicap. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the first day's events at the Munawatu Racing Club's Autumn, meeting close at* 10 p\m. on Tuesday. Weights for the first day's events at the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's meeting aTe due on Friday ne^t. Tho New Zealand-bred Manakau started at the Hawkesbury races, near Sydney, on March 15, but was not mentioned in the betting and finished out of a place. When stallions aro rising eight it rarely pays to continue racing them (says the "Sydney Referee','), but though Britain was believed to have finished his turf career, and is the ago mentioned, Sir. C. Hebden has decided to have him trained again. As previously,.the son, of Grafton will bo an inmate' of 15.l 5 . Nolan's stable, and "as lie is quite sound, perhaps lie may add to iiis winning account before ho is finally retired. Britain's last start was when he won . City Tattersall's Cup u April of last year. The five horses, at the top of tho Tn'ompson Handicap failed to mako the acceptance, but there are twenty-oiio horses remaining- in, and with such as Bon Ton, Undecided, Emperador, Peroneal, Potoa, and Heatlicrbrae to measure strides, a good raco should result. The four colts which started in the A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes at Randwick last Saturday realised as yearlings a total of 2420 guineas. Andelosia bfouglrt i 900 guineas, Beragoon 700 guineas, Eiibulus 420 guineas, and Radnor 400 guineas. The last-named won the race. •

Cabled advice from Sydney states that the third day of the A.J.C. meeting was a disastrous one for backers. Bon Reve has not had liis first day's engagements at Trentham continued. Tho Lincolnshire Handicap will be run on , Tuesday next, and the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase on Friday next. A matter of which we do not liear much nowadays in Ireland is that relating to the appointment of stipendiary stewards (says "Blackthorn" m the London "Sportsman"). At one time it,was urged by certain writers that it was most important and very pressing that these paid gentlemen should at once be nominated, put many of us could not quite follow tho argument. ■ Australia was quoted as a country in which the "paid steward" was a necessity, and it was supposed that what was best for that continent should also bo'best for Ireland. But we have proceeded very well witjhout the "paid steward," and I really do -not see that there is any occasion for his advent. Last year the stewards of tho Turf. Club and I.N.H.S. Committee issued an order to the effect that there should bo three acting stewards for each meeting, and that tho names of those who would act should cithpr bo published in "The Racing Calendar" the Friday before the moeting took place or be posted'up in a conspicu : ous place in the weight room. Hitherto tho custom at many "small" meetings was that the race-card was adorned with a. long array of nanves of stewards, and it was permissible' in many cases to doubt whother all these stewards had a eound, working knowledge of the rules.. Of course the various clerks of the course choose for acting stewards those gentlemen whoso , acquaintance with the laws of racing they I have reason to believe is sound. The institution of that rule calling for this limited number of acting stewards was one of the best pieces of legislation the turf governing bodies introduced-for some time, and it has worked exceedingly well.
