The stipendiary stewards have given tho following finding in connection with the running of Valido at the Randwick races:—"Wo cannot but regard the form as inconsistent; but taking into consideration the. difference in the scale of weights and the run'Valido got oii. Saturday in tho big' field, we hold that those connected with the horjo are entitled to have their explanation accepted. The difference in the betting on the two races was unsatisfactory and unexplained, and wo consider ' tho employment "of Burke on tho first day, when Pinn, the rider on the second day, was not riding for the stable, was ill-advised." Valido is owned by Mr. G. D. Greenwood. of New Zealand. The horse won the Flying Handicap at Band wick on Easter Monday, and the stipendiary stewards asked for an inquiry into his running on that day as compared with that on the previous Saturday, when Valido finished about eighth in tho High-weight Handicap, carrying 9st. 71b. IBi Glincok.l In tho Easter Handicap at Kiccartou, Heathcrbrae, Sst., got left fully half a dozen lengths at tho barrier, and then finished fourth; while on the sccond day, with an additional 51b. on her back, she won tho Templeton Handicap, six furlongs, in lmin. Usee. This was' the fastest gallop of the meeting. 'With only '7sf. 131b. on lier back, Sir Geo. Clifford's mare may be depended upon to'make the acceptance in the Thompson Handicap.

Los Angelos was sold at Christchurch on Wednesday for' 360gns„ and the chestnut gelding goes into W. Clarke's 'stable at Riccarton. In well-informed quarters it is understood that ho is to bo prepared for hurdle racing. At the same sale, Culprit was passed in at 405gns. ,T.. H. Prosser, with ten horses,.,went from Porirua to Trentham yester<lay. J. Coylc is. also at headquarters with' Awahoii, who' has been supported for tho Thompson Handicap. l'otoa and Hohungatahi, in charge nf their owner/Mr. W'. Bon Revo has made a good recovery from the injuries which he met with at Trentham in January, and at present he shows no. marks on his legs. The racing which ho' had at Riccarton should improve him a good deal, and he may lie expected to show his' best form next iroiith.

Maldy M'Uregor, next to Colorado F., the world's fastest three-year-old trotting colt, tho' champion of his age last year and winner of the fastest heat in the regular Futurity race, lias been sold to Mr. W. Schlesinger, in Austrian buyer, for ,£3200. Tho price is the highest foreign buyers liavo paid for an American trotting liorso in a public sale.

Whether by means of Mendelism we shall ever be ablo to reduce the breeding of thoroughbreds to u more or less exact science may bo doubted. Anything which tends to add "to our knowledge of the subject, however, is to bo welcomed (says "Vigilant" in the London "Sportsman ). I am sure, for example, that tho Bruco Lowe theory has been in many ways helpful to breeders, more especially in regard to building up a family by means of judicious crossing, as, for instance, was the case with ltascnl, tho best horse of his year in Austria-Hungary a couple of seasons ago. He was the result of continuous blending of successive generations of-mares belonging to an obscure outside family with sires of the best running mid sire families. This gradual process may, of course, at the-outset have been rule of thumb, or'even chance -work, but breeders in Hungary and Austria were quick to appreciate ■ the good in Bruce Lowe's ideas, and even if chance was responsible for tlie matings of Eome of the earlier mares in tho bottom line of Rascal's pedigree, there is no doubt that tho continuance of tho principle involved was duo to design, and the filial mating of his dam with Racburn can only have, been the result of careful study.
