' WAEM WELCOME TO CRUISER v MELBOURNE. . By Telegraph—Press' Association—Copyright (Rec. March 26, 9.55 p.m.) Melbourne, March 26. The arrival c*f the second-class cruiser Melbourne, of the Australian ( fleet unit, was tho occasion of great demonstrating.
The cruiser Encounter and three destroyers met the ' Melbourne seven miles : outside the Heads,, and convoyod her up the bay, where two steamers, carrying Ministerial parties and a number of other vessels laden witlj tho public, met the Melbourne and joined in the procession. Crowds gathered on the 1 cliffs and participated in an enthusiastic welcome. The shipping and the- city, were also decorated.. Later in the day the Governor-General, Lord- Penman, aboard the Encounter, officially (received arid welcomed, the Melbourne's captain, and subsequently mado ; un official call aboard tho Melbourne.
