THE CARNIVAL.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DAY. UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT. GREAT CROWD AT NEWTOWN PARK. Big as were tho crowds which attended the Citizens' Carnival on Saturday they wero greatly exceeded by those which assembled at Newtown. Park yesterday. At the height of the day there'must hive been something like twenty thousand peoplo on tho grounds. If. tho great fete does i nothing ;else it has disposed once, and for all of tjie idea that- Wellington people nro incapablo of uniting whole-heartedly and joyously in a civ.ic merry-making./ A captious critic might find any amount of fault with tho carnival arrangements —there were things done that might have been better done and things undone that might have' been done—but no ono. could help admiring the spirit of gaiety which pervaded the crowd. Good humour and a spirit of fuu were everywhere apparent, and men, - women, and children made it evident' that they were enjoying themtelves immensely".

Apart .from' a si iff' southerly, tho weather yesterday gave no cause for complaint. . 'During tho great part of tho clay the sun shone brightly and the wind moderated in the afternoon. In part yesterday's proceedings were a repetition of thoso of, Saturday. Sideshows, guessing competitions, trading and refreshment, booths were again liberally patronised.. The maypole, dances by little oiies garbed in fancy dress and by bigger girls dressed in v.-hite, wero repeated, and attracted as much • interest and admiration as on Saturday. Highland and Irish dancing and other fancy dances-were also 1 again' in evidence and as popular as ever. Music was supplied yesterday, by the Tramways Band, Fifth Regiment Band,-and Ponsonb'y Boys' Band. Tho bagpipes also wero very much in evidence.. ' .

An unrehearsed spectacle was, provided at 2 p.m. yesterday, when a firo broko out' in some bush and gorso on a hillside 'at tho' upper end of tho Park. Tho flames spread rapidly, and volumes of smoko wero soon, rolling down the Park. Much damage might liavo, been done but for tho efforts' of. a party of Boy Scouts, who set to work to beat out the flames with branches. Two lire-motors presentarrived upon tho scene, and after 20 minutes of strenuous beating, tho firemen and tho boys between tliem completely extinguished the flames. , Two boys, Scout Hart, of tho Newtown troop, and Scout Erskine, of tho St. Peter's troop, wero overcome by heat and smoke, and had to receive attention at . the hospital tent. It is stated, that Hart had gone to the rescue of' Erskine when' ho was himself overcome by tho smoke.
