PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Palmerston North, March 24. ■ . , A successful start'was made'early on' Saturday forenoon with the earlier rounds of the Wellington provincial lawn tennis, championships, when'a-really first-class-, game in the ladies' series was witnessed,.; This was between Miss Hartgill and Miss Baird in the final of the ladies* pionship. The struggle was hard and | close, and Miss Hartgill only won on tlio last few strokes. She lost considerably to her opponent in the earlier stages, but' gradually pulled up. Both ladies played excellent tennis, Miss Hartgill's being tha inoro vigorous. Her placing in the latter v stages and her low forcing driyes kepfc v her opponent very busy. Miss Baird, who played with fine length and judg-' ment at the start; lost some of her accuracy as the game proceeded. Miss Hartgill eventually came out. tho winner.
