CHAMPION REGATTA.

LAST TWO RACES.

STAR WINS THE SENIOR FOURS

Tho two races in tho Championship Regatta programme, which had to bo postponed through tlcress of weather on Saturday afternoon, were rowed on Hie boutlierly courso yesterday morning. On account of some of the visiting crews having gone home, tho number of crews starting in each race was somewhat reduced. Tho Star Club, who bad not previously won a raco on tho programme, won both events. l'ollowi ug were tho results:— Maiden Pairs. One mile. First, .£5; second, <£1. Star B.C. (F. Martin, str., H. H. Young, bow) 1 Fetone B.C. (A. Glading, str., J. Childs, bow) - Wellington It.C. (A. Donaldson, str., i J. Hoare, bow) ••• 3 Also stai'ced: Blenheim R.C. and Canterbury E.G. Star led all the way, and won a punishing race by. nearly two lengths. They had all the advanta£o_ of the water, having the inside course. Wellington were three lengths behind, and Canterbury* and Blenheim (who were in a borrowed boat) were practically out of tho race.

Senior Fours. About a mile and a quarter. First, £ 12; second, .£3. - Star 8.C..(A. D. Bayfield, str., W. S. Wheeler 3, W. H. Brewer 2, W. E. C. Oswin, bow) 1 ICawatiri R.C. (S. Blight, str., J. Jfatthews 3, A. C. Hall 2, D. Straker, bow) 2 Wellington E.C. (H. Hinchliffe str., E. Cairns 3, S. Shilling 2, T. O. Jenkins, bow) 3 Also started: Petone Eowing Club. Tho distance for the race should have bean a mile and a half, but Evans Bay was too rough for the boats to go beyond 1 the point. The race was, therefore, started at the point. The race turned, out to_b9 ■a test of seamanship and navigation rather than of rowing. Bayfield tcqk his crew well down the bay inshore, losing lengths in ithe detour, but he had the ad- | vantage of smooth water inshore all the way. 'Petone followed Star, but could not stay with tlieui, anl practically gavo up the race rJt half-way. Wellington and Kawatiri chose a straight point-to-point c:mrso, but tho wind blew tlie-.n far out into the rough water, _and ithey could • get little pacc- on their bnats. • It was not until the last quarter of <:he race, however, that Star, looked at all likely to pick up their lost distance, but they did win hnntisc'eiy in 'Hie end bv about foijr lengths. Kawatiri beat Wellington by abuut half a length, for eeeend ,plac,°. Star rowed a very fine raco, and would probably have beaton the other crews even ,if they had all taken the same conrfe. \ ■ '
