MAYOR & STUDENTS.
CEREMONY AT THE TOWN HALL. Representatives of the University Colleges of Auckland, Canterbury and Otago, who have come to Wellington to tako part in the inter-collegiate debating and sports tournaments, were accorded a welcome at the Town Hall on Saturday morning by the Mayor (Mr, D. M'Laven). Visiting students and representatives of Victoria College were present in strong force. On the platform with the Mayor wero Mr. C\ Wilson (chairman of' the Victoria College Council), Professor l'icken. tlife Hon. Dr. Collins, tho Hon. C. M. Luke, tho Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, Mr. J. C. M'Dowell (president of tho Victoria College Students' Association*. Tho Mayor extended a hearty welcome to the students from the various centres, and expressed a hops that their stay would b? in every way pleasant and their tournament a great success. Through thorn ho extended a greeting to the various educational institutions which they, represented, and hopod that thoso institutions would strengthen as timo went on. for an educated democracy, lio said, was essential to the welfare of tho country, lio also thanked tho Victoria College Students' Association and students generally for entering into co-operation with the citizens in their carnival. Professor Picken. qn behalf of the Professorial Board, extended a hearty wel-. come to tho visitors, and vat his cull cheers for tlio visitors wero given by tho Victoria College students.
