NEWS AND NOTES.
A meeting of the General Committee of tho Citizens' Carnival was held in the Mayor's Toom, Toivn Ilall, last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. D. McLaren) presiding. 11l reply to a request for a grant of 50 per cent, of tho tramway traffic takings on Easter .Saturday and Monday over and nlxivo the takings for tho corresponding period of last year on tho Newtown and Lyall Bay routes, and on the two sections from Courtenay Place to Mansfield Street, the Tramway Board regretted that it could not see its way to accede thereto. Tho lioard pointed out, in a letter, that the board was already committed to certain expenditure in regard to the lighting of Newtown Park for evening sports, illuminated cars, and other requirements in connection with such special arrangements as would be absolutely necessary in dealing with the traffic at tho Newtown end. The lioard added that should tho revenuo excoad anticipations for these days, it would favourably consider a recommendation to tlie City Council for a donation to tho funds.
A donation of .£201) was contributed to tho Carnival funds by Messrs. .T. Staples and Co. The donations to date, it was reported, now total .£358 Os. 9iT. Arrangements, it was agreed, will be made for tho free conveyance on the cars of performing bandsmen travelling in uniform. A comniiljco of ladies will be on duty with collecting-boxes on Sunday afternoon at tho Park. Councillor Fletcho.r, reporting on behalf of the Cycle Committee, said that preliminary arrangements had been ™pcpf=fully completed for a cycle meeting at Trontham, to l>e held cither on April 19 or 20. The Mayor reported that an organ recital by Mr. Maughan Barnott had been set down for Wednesday next, but it had sinco been found that tlie_ Town Hall wonild not lie available, having been previously engaged.
PICTURES. , Tlio first , of the series of functions in connection with the scheme for raising funds to. beautify the city reserves, held at Lyall Bay on Saturday last, was very successful, and despite the weather conditions, the swimming section are to be congratulated on their initial effort. The second effort will take place in the Town Hall to-morrow (Thursday) evening, when the whole of the motion 'picture companies of the city will provide a show. The firms are vying with each other to show their best pictures so thai the entertainment should make the combined show an excellent one. _ The companies, in. addition to providing all the films, machines, and accessories, will also provide t'ie orchestra. The charge will l)e sixpence, but a section will bo reserved for patrons reserving their seats. The art union ticket, which entitles the holder to a chance in the five pictures, aggrogating XIOO, will 1)0 available for tlio reserved section. Seats may bo booked at Messrs. Abel's, Manners Street. The. whole of the proceeds will go to help the fund.
JOTTINGS, Tho mammoth carnival opens at Newtown Park on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., when tho first section of the programme will commence. Tho electric light staff commenced operations at Newtown Park in connebtion with the extra lighting required for the evening entertainments. Over 150 lights are being installed in addition to the present plant now on tho grouud. In connection with the electric light sports splendid entries havo been received for tho two .nights' programme and the sports section are gratified to know that their efforts have lieen appreciated by athletes; The committee, however, havo decided to accept post entries for all events with tho exception' of the Marathon, 50yds., 75yds., 300 yds., 440 yds., H mile, 1000 yds. handicaps.
Post will bo received for tho Highland piping and dancing competitions, and also for tlio fancy dress competitions for which .£ls is being allocated in prizes. The Plunket Nurse Society have arranged for a baby show oh Saturday afternoon. Five competitions will take place for babies under 2 years. In addition there will be a special prize for tho champion baby. Entries closo at the society's rooms, 86 Vivian Street, at G p.m. on Thursday. In connection with the deputation of clergymen and other representatives of the Church of England, which waited upon the Mayor with Tegard to tho boxing contests being held in the Town Hall during Holy Week, representations wero made and the Wellington Boxing Association have now fixed tho date forTuesday, March 25. In addition to a 15rouud bout between Ellis and Thompson, the inter-university championship will also bo' decided. All the universities in the Dominion will be represented. A group of enthusiastic Scotchmen associated witli the Scottish Society of Wellington, have arranged a number of Highland pipe music and dancing competitions. The sum of ,£2G lias been allocated for prize money, and the principal events are pipe music, marches, strathspeys, reels, laments; dancing Highland fling, sword dance,/Shcautreus, Irish jig, and hornpipe. The sports section have appointed Messrs. Jones and Keesing to make arrangements for a fancy dress competition. ,£ls is being given in, prizes and the competitions will include: Most original costume (lady or man), most handsome costume (lady or man), most original costume for boys and girls. ,■ This event will be put on as ail attraction for Easier Monday night, when special lighting will bo provided. Tost entries will be accepted. .
Major Cowles has in training a large number of school children. Various large displays will be given on. both days. Rome GOO from the city and suburban schools are taking part. Their items include: Flap drill, red, white, and blue forming the Union Jack, and other very s)>eclocular items. The -beautiful niaypolo and other dances will be out on by smaller groups. Miss Bland has charge of this section. The executive have decided that it will be imnossiblo to sell art union tickets (it the Newtown Park gates, consequently only those tickets, purchased-else-' where will be available. Art union tickets may be obtained in all ports of the town and suburbs.
